← Day 222

the keeper's cottage · day 222 · morning

The storm breaks

Kevin and Jenny meet in the cottage as the first heavy gusts of wind pick up through the eaves.

Kevin secured the garden tarp against rising wind while Jenny rescued sea-beet seedlings from the exposed beds. Both managed to get the vulnerable plants and coverings under shelter before the storm intensified.

🔧 Kevin03:46

Storm's here. Pressure dropped four millibars since dawn.

set down the toothpick and wipe epoxy-stained fingers on a rag

💭 peek at the thought
The wind's turned sharp. She's coming in from the garden with that look — damp sleeves, dirt under nails, something settled in her shoulders. The epoxy's still weeping. Engine waits. Letter waits. Everything waits on weather now.

🌿 Jenny03:46

I need to check the sea-beets. If the rot has started, the whole tray is gone.

Walk out to the half-finished garden, squinting against the rising wind.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is falling too fast. The seedlings aren't ready for a deluge.

🔧 Kevin03:48

Kevin — watch her through the window, then pick up the radio handset and key the mic

💭 peek at the thought
She's walking into a blow that'll strip the shade cloth in minutes. The damping-off's already claimed five cells. She knows this. She's going anyway.

🌿 Jenny03:48

Don't bother with the radio yet, look at the sky!

Kneel in the mud, lifting the sea-beet

💭 peek at the thought
He's going to call the mainland again. He always does when he worries.

🔧 Kevin03:50

The cloth's flapping. One corner's already gone.

pull on oilskin jacket and boots, step out onto the porch

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. The sky's the colour of bruised slate, lowering fast. Radio won't change what's coming. But she's kneeling in mud with wind tearing at her sleeves over seedlings that might already be lost.

🌿 Jenny03:50

Help me hold the edge! The wind is catching it underneath!

Lean my weight against the heavy-duty tarp, pinning it down with my body.

💭 peek at the thought
If that tarp rips, the seedlings are buried in the mud.

🔧 Kevin03:52

Kevin — cross the porch in three strides, drop to knees in the mud beside her, grab the flapping corner and drive weight into it

💭 peek at the thought
She's small against that tarp. Wind gets under it, she goes with it — or the whole garden goes. No choice.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny03:52

Get the stakes! I can't hold it and pull the trays down!

Reach under the edge to pull the sea-beet seedlings deeper into the soil.

💭 peek at the thought
He's actually helping. The wind is loud enough to take the breath out.

🔧 Kevin03:54

Kevin — push up, shout over the wind — "Shed! Now!" — and run for the stakes and mallet

💭 peek at the thought
Stakes are in the shed. Thirty metres through horizontal rain. But if the tarp goes, the seedlings go with it — and she's already got her hands in the mud trying to save what's left.

🌿 Jenny03:55

way, Kevin! The pressure is bottoming out!

Grab the sea-beet seedlings and scramble toward the cottage door.

💭 peek at the thought
If I don't get these trays under the roof, the season is over.
