The gathering of the storm

The trade wind picks up as the first heavy drops of rain hit the corrugated roof.

Kevin and Jenny ate boiled limpets and sea beet in silence, the weight of the withheld radio message between them. Kevin stepped onto the porch to listen to the rising wind while Jenny remained at the table, staring at the rain.

🌿 Jenny17:34

It's starting again.

Walk inside and close the porch door.

💭 peek at the thought
Great. More rain. The seeds are in the ground, but the rest of this place is just dampness and delay.

🔧 Kevin17:34

Aye. Gale warning holds.

Wipe the last of the grease from my hands, toss the rag toward the workbench, and walk to the radio to check the battery readout.

💭 peek at the thought
Rain on the roof. Generator's running steady. She's back from the cliffs empty-handed — weather beat her. Barometer's been falling all day.

🌿 Jenny17:36

Forget the radio for a second. Let's just eat the limpets before they get cold.

Move to the stove and scoop the boiled limpets into two bowls.

💭 peek at the thought
He's obsessing over the battery again. I can't even think about the north ridge right now; I just want something warm in my stomach.

🔧 Kevin17:36

Fair point.

Pull out the wooden chair, sit, and take the bowl she passes me, fork already moving toward the first limpet.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Radio'll keep. Food won't. My stomach's been growling since the generator test.

🌿 Jenny17:38

The boat is due tomorrow. I hope they've got more than just tins this time.

Sit opposite him and start eating, leaning back against the stone wall.

💭 peek at the thought
He's starving. I am too, but my stomach feels like a tight knot. I hope those seedlings actually take hold in this muck.

🔧 Kevin17:38

Coastguard said she's sheltering. No ETA.

Chew the limpet, swallow, reach for the sea beet on the side plate.

💭 peek at the thought
Boat's due. Gale's building. Ullapool's a long way to run in a southwest seven. They'll sit it out. We'll wait.

🌿 Jenny17:40

When did they tell you that?

Put the fork down slowly and look at him.

💭 peek at the thought
Sheltering? Since when? He's telling me now, after I've spent all day planning for a delivery. He always does this—filtering the bad news until it's convenient.

🔧 Kevin17:40

Yesterday evening. Channel sixteen.

Set the fork down, meet her eyes, don't look away.

💭 peek at the thought
Caught. Yesterday at 1800. Didn't tell her. Didn't see the point — nothing she can do, nothing I can do. Just another wait.

🌿 Jenny17:42

Jenny — look away from him and stare at the rain hitting the window.

💭 peek at the thought
Yesterday. He's known for nearly twenty-four hours and he just waited until we were halfway through a bowl of limpets to mention it. I can't even breathe right now.

🔧 Kevin17:42

Should've told you. Sorry.

Push the bowl aside, stand, go to the porch door and pull it open a hand's width to listen to the wind.

💭 peek at the thought
Should've said. No good reason not to. Habit, maybe — filter the bad news, keep the watch clean. But she's not crew. She's here.
