← Day 232

the keeper's cottage · day 232 · afternoon

Midday heat lingers

Kevin and Jenny sit in the cottage as the humidity peaks, the high tide remaining against the dock pilings.

The rain has intensified into a heavy, rhythmic drumming against the roof of the keeper's cottage. Inside, the air is humid with the smell of damp earth and drying wood. Kevin and Jenny sit at the small table, the weight of the coming supply boat hanging over them as the west wind lashes the island.

🔧 Kevin12:52

Dinghy's solid. Transom held. Supply boat in two days if she comes.

pull out a chair at the kitchen table and sit, wiping hands on a rag

💭 peek at the thought
The air's thick enough to drink. Barometer's steady at 1001 but that humidity... storm's building somewhere west. Dinghy held at the dock — transom bolts did their job. Now we wait.

If she comes, I need more lime for the sea beet beds.

plate a portion of boiled limpets and slide them across the table toward him.

💭 peek at the thought
Two days. Or ten. My stomach is growling louder than the rain on the roof.

🔧 Kevin12:54

Lime's in the crate by the generator. Enough for two more beds if we crush it fine.

take the plate of limpets, fork one into my mouth, chew slowly

💭 peek at the thought
She's planning ahead. Good. Means she's staying.

🌿 Jenny12:54

It needs to be fine; the pH is still too low for the seedlings.

sketch a quick diagram of the sea beet's salt glands on the margin of my notebook.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so focused on the mechanics while I'm worried about the salt levels in the soil.

🔧 Kevin12:58

(nod at her sketch) Salt pumps. Like bilge valves — push the bad out, keep the good in.

stand, walk to the crate by the generator, lift the lid, scoop out a double handful of crushed lime, carry it back to the table and set it beside her notebook

💭 peek at the thought
She sees the glands clear as day. I still just see green leaves fighting salt.

🌿 Jenny12:59

If I don't get the lime-treated patch cleared, the salt will kill the roots anyway.

take a bite of a limpet, feeling the grit of the salt against my teeth.

💭 peek at the thought
He sees everything as a mechanism to be fixed, but the chemistry is a delicate balance.

🔧 Kevin13:02

We'll turn the patch tomorrow at low tide. Scrape the top inch, mix in this lime, let it breathe before we plant.

pick up a limpet from the plate, crack it open with my thumbnail, suck the meat out, spit the shell into my palm to toss later

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. We're patching symptoms while the tide's still coming in. Need to flip the soil, not just dust it.

🌿 Jenny13:02

If the boat doesn't show, I'm going to have to start rationing the heirloom seeds.

reach out and touch the lime in the pile, the white powder dry against my skin.

💭 peek at the thought
Low tide is always the answer, but the rain is turning the path to soup.
