The Squall Approaches

Kevin and Jenny meet at the dock as the wind begins to pick up, the heavy air finally smelling of ozone and salt.

The sky has turned a bruised purple as the first heavy licks of the western rain lash against the island. Kevin and Jenny retreat to the cottage, the air thickening with the scent of ozone and salt-damp earth. The barometer continues to drop, signaling a significant storm front moving in.

🌿 Jenny15:18

The sky is the wrong color, Kevin. We need to get the tin into the way before the first real hit.

Jenny wipes the salt from her palms and grabs the rusted seed tin, her movements tight and impatient.

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer is dropping too fast; if I don't get these seeds inside now, the humidity will rot them all.

Got it. Cottage porch?

take the seed tin from Jenny and walk up the path toward the cottage

💭 peek at the thought
She's right about the sky. Green-grey bruising on the western horizon. The barometer's been dropping all day — 997 now, steady but the trend's wrong. Tin's heavy, rusted, marked 'E'. She wants it in the cottage before the rain drives horizontal. I'll take the weight off her wrists.

🌿 Jenny15:19

Inside. Now. I need to check the seal on the windows before the wind starts howling.

Jenny follows him, her eyes darting toward the gathering clouds in the west as she clutches her notebook to her chest.

💭 peek at the thought
If the rain hits that tin before it's inside the kitchen, my grandmother's seeds are way for.

🔧 Kevin15:21

Tin's on the table. I'll check the porch door shim.

set the rusted seed tin on the cottage table and walk to the porch door to examine the bottom hinge

💭 peek at the thought
Windows first, she says. Smart. The porch door still leaks at the bottom hinge where the cedar shim's working loose. I'll set the tin on the table and check the latches while she does the glass.

🌿 Jenny15:22

Pull the cedar shims from under the door, I saw another one at the shrine. We need to wedge it tighter. I'll grab the shims from the shrine, you watch the tin—if that seal's compromised, we lose everything. [whispering] Come on, come on... there's got to be a piece I used. Got them. Now help me wedge that door before the wind catches it.

Jenny moves to the door frame, her fingers already reaching for the pile of cedar shims by the window. </think>THOUGHT: The door's got give to it, and once that wind hits full force, the whole thing's going to blow. Jenny heads toward the s

💭 peek at the thought
The hinge is loose—he's already checking it, but I need to secure the damn thing before the wind catches the door.

🔧 Kevin15:23

Go. I've got the door.

pull the loose cedar shim from under the porch door bottom hinge and drive a fresh one in tighter with the heel of my boot

💭 peek at the thought
The door's got give at the bottom hinge — wind'll drive rain straight under it. She's going to the shrine for another shim. I'll wedge what we have now and hold the tin if the seal's suspect. That 'E' tin's been sealed a long time.

🌿 Jenny15:24

Grab the paper towels from the kitchen, I need to wrap the seed packets before they start clammying up.

Jenny backs away from the door and heads toward the kitchen window, her silhouette sharp against the darkening sky.

💭 peek at the thought
Good, he's securing the door, but I can hear that wind picking up and the barometer's still dropping fast.

🔧 Kevin15:25

On it.

walk to the kitchen drawer and pull out the roll of paper towels

💭 peek at the thought
Seed packets first — damp kills viability fast. Paper towels in the kitchen drawer by the stove. I'll grab them and meet her at the table with the tin.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny15:27

Lay them flat. I need to check every packet for moisture.

Jenny carefully opens the rusted tin, her hands trembling slightly as she spreads out the heirloom seeds.

💭 peek at the thought
The door is holding for now, but the air is turning heavy. If the humidity gets into that tin, the seeds will rot before they even sprout.

🔧 Kevin15:27

Towels flat. Take your time.

unroll paper towels flat on the cottage table beside the open seed tin

💭 peek at the thought
Tin's open. She's checking each packet — pepper, lettuce, tomato, basil. The damping-off in the seed trays has her spooked. Paper towels flat on the table, she'll wrap what's dry, isolate what's not. I'll stand ready.
