A Quiet Stretch

Back at the cottage.

Kevin and Jenny cleared the packed silt from the north drainage channel using a crowbar and spade, restoring flow before the tide turned. They worked efficiently together, removing heavy clay-like sediment bucket by bucket until hitting gravel at the channel base.

Kevin — walk to the table, pick up the letter to Tom, read it again slowly, then fold it neatly and place it under the jar of coffee where Jenny will see it if she looks.

💭 peek at the thought
The letter to Tom sits on the table, damp and unsealed. I keep turning it over in my hands — not sure if I should send it, burn it, or wait. The silence with him is heavier than the fog rolling in off the cliffs.

🌿 Jenny17:22

Kevin, the barometer's at 990. You need to see this—if the channel slits shut before I clear that silt, the garden's gone.

Walk to the drainage channel with spade and check silt depth against tide schedule.

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer's dropping faster than I thought—990 and steady, but I can feel the island holding its breath. That channel needs clearing before the tide comes in, and those seedlings are already showing damping-off in the corners. Kevin always thinks about the Yanmar, but the real machine here is the drainage.

🔧 Kevin17:22

On my way. Hand me the crowbar — if it’s packed, we’ll need to break it loose before the tide turns.

walk toward the garden, grab the crowbar leaning by the shed, and head for the drainage channel where Jenny is already probing the silt with her spade.

💭 peek at the thought
She’s right — if the channel blocks at low tide, the runoff has nowhere to go. The garden’s already half drowned; another surge of rain and it’ll wash the seedlings out for good. I should’ve checked it yesterday.

🌿 Jenny17:23

Watch your step, the silt's packed like clay here. We need to dig deep or the whole patch chokes.

Kneel at the edge of the channel and use the spade to pry the first layer loose.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is heavy today, like the air before a storm. If we don't get this channel open now, the sea beets will rot in the roots. I'm tired of watching the island take what I plant.

🔧 Kevin17:25

I’ll hit it from below — if we meet in the middle, we’ll have a flow. Keep the edge clean so it doesn’t just slide back in.

kneel opposite Jenny, drive the crowbar into the packed silt at a shallow angle, and use my weight to lever it loose in chunks, pulling the broken clay toward the center of the channel.

💭 peek at the thought
This silt’s like concrete — no wonder the water’s backing up. If we don’t get this cleared before the tide comes in, the seedbeds will sit in stagnant water and rot. I’ll take the downstream end where it’s thinner; she’s got the leverage upstream.

🌿 Jenny17:25

It's holding tight. Give me the bucket, I need to clear the runoff before the water starts backing up again.

Use the spade to scoop the loosened debris out of the channel and clear the path toward the south.

💭 peek at the thought
The silt is stubborn, thick with salt and old organic decay. If we don't break the surface, the next tide will just push it back into the beds. I can see the water already sitting around the stems of the sea beets—they're starting to yellow.

🔧 Kevin17:27

Bucket’s by the gate. I’ll keep prying — don’t stop until you hit gravel.

reach back without looking, grab the galvanized bucket from the fence post, and toss it to her; then drive the crowbar deeper into the packed silt and lever another slab free, flinging it clear of the channel.

💭 peek at the thought
The water’s already lapping at the toe of the bank — if we don’t get the outlet clear, it’ll back up into the beds within the hour. She’s moving fast; I’ll keep the upstream face breaking so she has room to work.

🌿 Jenny17:27

It's moving. Keep going, if we leave any sediment it'll just build up again.

Scoop the heavy silt into the bucket and carry it to the edge of the garden wall to dump.

💭 peek at the thought
The water is finally starting to move, a slow trickle toward the sea. If we can get the channel clear, the sea beets might survive the night's damp. way back is screaming, but the hunger is a duller tackle.
