The Rising Tide and the Chick
The water begins to creep back over the lower shelf of the pools. You and Jenny meet near the shore, the air smelling heavy of salt and damp earth.
Kevin and Jenny headed to the tide pools during the steady rain to forage for food. Kevin successfully gathered a large cluster of limpets from the lower shelves while Jenny struggled to find much as the water began to rise.

Be careful, they flood fast.
Use a small knife to pry a large limpet from the shelf, wincing as the movement pulls at my ankle.

Tuck the limpets into the cloth and stand up slowly, bracing my hand against the cold rock for balance.

Six. That'll do.
climb back up the rocks toward shore, moving slow and deliberate, clutching the cloth against my chest

We need to get up before the shelf is gone.
Limp toward the beach, keeping my weight heavily on my left side, my eyes fixed on the cottage door.
