← Day 241

the garden · day 241 · morning

The tide begins to recede

The heat remains oppressive as the tide starts its slow retreat, and the barometer continues its steady dip.

Kevin sends the morning radio transmission to the coast while the rain begins to intensify from the west. Jenny stays at the garden, monitoring her swelling ankle as the tide retreats toward the low.

🔧 Kevin22:47

Kevin — walk to the cottage, grab the letter to Tom from the radio shack, then head to the dock for the morning radio schedule

💭 peek at the thought
Barometer's still dropping. 996 steady earlier, now it's sliding. Tide's falling — good. Means I can get at the mooring ring mortise at slack water like I planned. Jellyfish should be clearing the intake with the outgoing current. Need to send Tom's letter on the morning schedule first though. Radio shack's dry, aerial's still down but the set works receive-only. Can transmit on the backup whip if the insulator holds.

🌿 Jenny22:49

Jenny — sit on the wooden crate, clutching the pen as I watch the red streaks pulse against my ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
The wood is turning to mush; I can see the grain pulling apart, and he's just hammering nails into a ghost.

🔧 Kevin22:49

You need the brace re-taped. Swelling's down from yesterday.

walk past her to the radio shack, pull the folded letter from my pocket, set it on the operating table beside the shortwave set

💭 peek at the thought
She's still on the crate. Ankle's angry — red streaks tracking up. She won't let me near it proper. Pen in her hand like she's writing but the notebook's closed. Stubborn. Both of us. Radio schedule in ten minutes. Letter's in my pocket. Need to send it before the supply boat window closes.

🌿 Jenny22:50

It's not just the swelling, Kevin. It's the salt.

Lean back against the rough stone wall, tracing the jagged Edge of a leaf with my thumb.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks a bit of tape fixes the fact that the island is rotting from the inside out.

🔧 Kevin22:51

Salt don't care. Neither does infection. Let me re-do it after the radio sked.

key the mic on the shortwave, call the coast station on the scheduled frequency, wait for the traffic net to acknowledge

💭 peek at the thought
Salt in the wound. Literal. She's right — the brace chafes, the straps cut, sweat and seawater make it raw. She won't let me cut the driftwood splints new, won't let me re-wrap with the softer cloth from the supply crate. Says it holds. It holds, but it's eating her. Radio schedule's now. Letter first. Then the Yanmar intake. Then the mooring ring at slack.

🌿 Jenny22:52

way don't make it too tight this time.

Watch the rain start to blur the edges of the garden, feeling the weeds claim another inch.

💭 peek at the thought
He talks about my body like a waymar engine he can just torque down and silence.

🔧 Kevin22:53

This is Sorrel Island, Sorrel Island, morning traffic, one outgoing message for relay.

read the letter into the mic — "Tom. Yanmar cutless bearing failed. Jenny's ankle infected, holding. Supply boat due in three. No reply needed. K."

💭 peek at the thought
She's bargaining. Good. Means she'll let me touch it. "Not too tight" — I can work with that. The mic's hot, coast station's coming back. Need to pass Tom's letter text clean, no errors. They'll relay it to the mainland post. Three weeks to reach him, maybe more. Four lines. Bearing's gone. She's stubborn. No signature.

🌿 Jenny22:54

Jenny — close my eyes and listen to the static of the radio fade into the rain on the roof.

💭 peek at the thought
He sends it off like a mechanical failure, like the dock ring or the broken mast. ownSAY: (Silence)

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin22:55

Message sent. Coast station confirmed relay.

unkey the mic, step out of the radio shack, head down to the dock and the dinghy to clear the Yanmar intake screen

💭 peek at the thought
Message sent. Coast station read it back clean. Letter's in the system now. Out of my hands. Static and rain — same sound almost. Jenny's eyes still closed. She's listening to something else. Or nothing. Ankle needs doing. Tide's still falling. Jellyfish should be clearing the intake with the ebb. Yanmar first, then mooring ring at slack.
