← Day 243

Apart — Kevin at the keeper's cottage, Jenny at the woods

The Pressure Drops

Kevin is at the cottage while Jenny is in the woods.

The air is heavy and still, though the barometer continues its descent to 988 hPa, signaling a shift in the weather. The tide is out, exposing the slick, dark rocks of the tide pools. Kevin has finished his checks of the dinghy and the mast, while Jenny returns from the woods exhausted and empty-handed.

🔧 Kevin — alone at the keeper's cottage

You consider securing loose gear.

🔧 Kevin00:50

Kevin — walk to the dock and check the dinghy's stern spring and forward cleat fastenings

💭 peek at the thought
Barometer's still sliding. 988 and holding steady's a lie — it'll drop again once the front hits proper. Dinghy's tied but the stern spring's new rope on old cleats. Generator's lashed but the exhaust elbow vibrates loose every storm. Porch door hinge still catches. Radio mast insulator's the spare porcelain, taped, not bolted. Too many things I meant to do proper and didn't.

🔧 Kevin00:54

Kevin — walk back to the cottage, check the generator lashings and porch door hinge, then secure the radio mast guy-lines

💭 peek at the thought
Stern spring's holding — new half-inch three-strand, long splice served with sail twine. Forward cleat's sound. But the mast bracket's still skewed a degree off true; the through-bolts I drove pulled the spruce step slightly. Under load in a chop, that alignment walks. Engine's faint vibration above half throttle will become a hard shake. Shaft's trued, sleeve pressed, prop nut at 35Nm — that much is done. But the bracket needs shimming or the step needs re-bedding, and I've no epoxy left worth a damn. Tub's down to thick residue.

🔧 Kevin00:58

Kevin — go inside, light the stove, put water on for tea, and check the food stores count against the notebook

💭 peek at the thought
Generator ratchet straps are tight, exhaust elbow solid. Porch door hinge — drove the cedar shim deeper, door seats clean now. Radio mast guys: three of four turnbuckles seized. Worked them free with penetrating oil and adjusted tension. Spare porcelain insulator on the bracket is seated and taped; coax is the old failed run coiled on the porch. No replacement. If the mast comes down, we're blind. Barometer's 988. Wind's backed to northeast in the last hour — that's the shift I woke to at 0200. Front's building offshore. Supply boat's not making this tide. Maybe not the next.

🌿 Jenny — alone at the woods

You feel the first change in wind.

🌿 Jenny00:52

Jenny — stop gathering wood, drop the heavy fallen branch of the screw pines, and start walking back toward the cottage.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping too fast for this kind of heat; I need to get back before the sky opens up completely.

🌿 Jenny00:56

Jenny — lean against a coconut palm tree to catch my breath, wiping grit from my eyes with the back of a dirty hand.

💭 peek at the thought
My ankle is throbbing with every step, and the smell of salt and damp earth is making me nauseous.

🌿 Jenny01:00

Jenny — reach into my pocket to feel the cold metal of grandmother's seed tin, tracing the edge of the lid.

💭 peek at the thought
If the boat doesn't come tomorrow, I'm going to lose my mind in this heat.
