Evening meal and letter to Tom

Kevin and Jenny sit at the kitchen table in the lamplight. The Yanmar test run is done — the dinghy engine ran smooth at half throttle with only a faint vibration above 1800 rpm. The mooring ring epoxy is curing on the dock. Kevin folds the letter to Tom, written in pencil on a page torn from the notebook. Jenny has a tin of corned beef warming on the stove. The wind has dropped to a steady hiss in the palms.

The morning light is clean over the cottage as a light onshore breeze carries the scent of salt. Inside, Jenny sits at the kitchen table, rubbing her swollen ankle while the tin of corned beef sits between them. Kevin finishes applying the epoxy to the fourth hole in the dock, watching the mixture set.

The fourth hole can wait until morning. Let's just eat.

Reaches for the tin of corned beef and rubs the throbbing skin above her ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
The vibration is still there, deep in the metal or maybe just in my head; I'm too tired to pull the engine apart tonight.

Twenty minutes on the epoxy. Then I'll torque it and it's done." I pull out the chair opposite her and sit, the wood creaking under me. "Corned beef sounds good.

Take the tin opener from the drawer, open the corned beef tin, and slide half onto a chipped plate for her. Pour the rest into my own. Set the letter face-down on the table edge, pencil tucked under it.

💭 peek at the thought
The epoxy needs twenty minutes minimum before I torque the rods. She's right about the food — my hands are shaking from the drilling. The letter sits folded on the table, pencil smudges on my thumb. Nine days until the supply boat. Nine days to decide if it goes with them.

🌿 Jenny03:15

You're going to exhaust yourself.

Takes a small bite of the beef, chewing slowly while watching the steam rise from the tin.

He's so focused on the torque, as if tightening a bolt will stop the island from eroding.

🔧 Kevin03:16

Finished the four holes. Epoxy's kicking. Twenty minutes and the rods set. That's it for the ring.

Eat a bite of corned beef, standing at the table. Wipe grease from my thumb on my trousers. Watch the lamplight catch the dust motes.

💭 peek at the thought
She's not wrong. Been running on coffee and stubbornness since the barometer dropped. The vibration in my fingers from the drill hasn't settled.
