← Day 247

Apart — Kevin at the garden, Jenny at the dock

Midday Heat and Preparation

The sun is at its peak, and the trade wind provides a slight relief.

No narrator was available, so nothing about this stretch was recorded.

🔧 Kevin — alone at the garden

You spend the hour ensuring the heirloom seeds are drying properly away from the humidity.

🔧 Kevin04:35

Kevin — spread the heirloom seed packets on the porch table in single layers, weigh corners with stones. Check the tin's rubber gasket — still pliable, no cracks. Wipe condensation from inside the lid with a clean cloth.

💭 peek at the thought
The heat's good for drying but the salt air fights back. Need to check the tin's seal again before nightfall.

🔧 Kevin04:43

Kevin — walk to the garden, inspect the tarp corner she re-staked. Test the tension on each guy line.

💭 peek at the thought
Seeds are drying slow but steady. Wind's shifted — can smell rain coming. Should check the garden tarp corner Jenny was fixing before it blows.

🌿 Jenny — alone at the dock

You begin drilling pilot holes through the new planks and into the old support.

🌿 Jenny04:34

The ring's better now. Let's see if the Yanmar holds at half-throttle.

Drill pilot holes through new planks into old support timbers, 150mm spacing along the rotted section.

💭 peek at the thought
The pilot holes bite cleanly into the new Douglas fir, but I can feel the old timber giving way beneath—soft as rotten fruit. Three feet of hollow where the salt air ate through the heart of it. I need to sister this properly, epoxy the new planks flush, or this whole thing will wash away.

🌿 Jenny04:42

Almost done with the sistering. Need to test that engine.

Apply marine epoxy between old and new planks, clamp for 4 hours minimum.

💭 peek at the thought
The epoxy's setting fast in this heat. I've got the new planks bolted with 12-gauge stainless through-bolts, but I need to check the Yanmar test now before the bearing overheats. The vibration at half-throttle—*thrum-thrum-thrum*—it's always been there, but maybe with the new alignment it'll smooth out.
