A Quiet Stretch

Back at the cottage.

The rain continues as a steady, rhythmic drumming against the roof of the cottage. The tide is out, exposing the slick, dark rocks of the tide pools and the muddy floor of the shore. The air is heavy with the scent of salt and damp earth.

🌿 Jenny19:43

The barometer is holding, at least that's one thing today.

Walk to the porch, lift the heavy plastic tarp off the seed tin, and inspect the tomato packets for new mold.

💭 peek at the thought
The tide is going out, and the air feels heavy enough to swallow. I need to check the seed tin again before the humidity gets any worse.

Holding steady at 1001. Could be worse.

walk to the porch and set the crowbar down beside the seed tin

💭 peek at the thought
She's watching the barometer same as me. Waiting for the other boot to drop. The helicopter message sits in my pocket like a stone.

🌿 Jenny19:45

It's the humidity. The moisture is finding every crack.

Reach into the tin and carefully pull out the tomato seed packets, checking the edges for dampness or white FU.

💭 peek at the thought
1001 is still falling. If it drops further, the epoxy will never cure properly on the mast step.

🔧 Kevin19:45

Epoxy on the wall's holding too. Tacky but set. Lime would've breathed better.

lean against the porch post and watch her work the packets

💭 peek at the thought
She's methodical. Good. The packets were compromised weeks ago — salt spray and a cracked crate. We're nursing them along.

🌿 Jenny19:47

Lime is for another day. Right now is just fighting the rot.

Rub the surface of a tomato packet between my fingers to see if the seeds have fused together.

💭 peek at the thought
He's right about the lime, but I don't have the energy to scrape the Stone again. These seeds are the priority right now.

🔧 Kevin19:47

Packets from the supply crate were wet before we got them. Doing better than they have any right to.

reach into my pocket and pull out the folded paper — the coast guard message — and hold it without unfolding

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Lime's for the wall at 0630 tomorrow. Today's the packets, the sail, the radio. And the conversation I've been dodging for a week.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny19:49

Let me see what they said. Is the boat delayed?

Take the paper from his hand and unfold it, my damp fingers shaking slightly.

💭 peek at the thought
If those seeds were wet in the crate, the whole batch is compromised. I should have checked them immediately.

🔧 Kevin19:49

Read it all.

stand still and let her take it

💭 peek at the thought
There it is. The moment. She asked for the message, not the helicopter. But the paper has both. I could've handed her a redacted version. I didn't.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny19:51

I'm reading it.

Scan the text of the message for a specific date or a reason for the diversion.

💭 peek at the thought
Nine days until the boat is due, and now this. We're even more alone out here than I thought.

🔧 Kevin19:51

Kevin — watch her face as she reads

💭 peek at the thought
The words are there in black and white. Supply boat diverted to medevac. Helicopter turned back — weather. No ETA. Dated six days ago. I heard it live on Channel 16. Sat on it for six days.
