Morning Meal

You and Jenny are back in the cottage kitchen, boiling water from the spring and preparing a stew of sea beet and corned beef. The stove crackles as you stir, and the scent of salt and meat fills the air.

Kevin left to reinforce the dock mooring ring with a steel doubler plate and through-bolts. Jenny stayed in the cottage to de-salt sea beet leaves and check the pH of the tomato row. The barometer continued to fall, indicating worsening weather.

🌿 Jenny10:36

The boat is due tomorrow. We should make sure the dock is clear for them.

stir the pot with a wooden spoon, watching the clouds thicken through the window.

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer is dropping again. If the boat doesn't come tomorrow, we're down to the last few tins.

Aye. After we eat, I’ll take a look at the ring. If it’s still loose, I’ll try oak wedges—cedar didn’t hold.

stir the stew, then ladle two bowls and set one in front of Jenny.

💭 peek at the thought
The stew smells good, but the dock’s mooring ring still worries me—cedar shims split, bolts torqued but ring shifts. Jenny’s right: we need it solid before the boat comes. I’ll check the ring again after eating, then drive home-made oak wedges if the cedar failed.

🌿 Jenny10:38

Oak might hold the tension better, but the wood is getting soft from the rot.

take the bowl, the steam fogging my glasses as I look at the sea beet in the broth.

💭 peek at the thought
way is better, but the salt here eats through everything eventually.

The mortise is rotted through to the back. Oak won’t fix that. I’ll fit a steel doubler plate tonight—should hold the ring true.

finish eating, then put the bowl down and walk to the workshop shelf to grab the steel doubler plate and a drill.

💭 peek at the thought
She’s right—oak’ll split too if the mortise is rotted clear through. We need a doubler plate, like I noted in the journal. Steel’s the only thing that’ll span the rot. I’ve got the plate from the last crate—just need to drill and bolt it.

🌿 Jenny10:40

Just make sure the edges are flush. I don't want the bolts shearing off again.

take a bite of the stew, the saltiness of the beet sharp on my tongue.

💭 peek at the thought
Steel is better, but the salt will find a way into the bolt holes eventually.

🔧 Kevin10:40

Flush. Countersunk, washers, nylocs. Won’t move.

grab the doubler plate, drill, 10mm bit, countersink, four 150mm stainless through-bolts with washers and nyloc nuts from the supply boat stores, and walk out to the dock.

💭 peek at the thought
She’s thinking ahead—flush edges stop the ring rocking and shearing bolts. Good catch. I’ll countersink the holes and use washers under the nuts.
