The Approaching Front

Kevin and Jenny meet by the garden wall as the wind begins to howl from the northeast. The clouds darken, and the first heavy drops of rain fall.

Kevin secured the radio mast guys and ran a second spring line on the dinghy, but Jenny slipped on the wet dock planks while carrying the seed tin, wrenching her ankle badly. The barometer rose to 976 hPa as the wind shifted northeast, confirming the front's approach despite the glass.

🌿 Jenny22:57

The barometer is dropping, Kevin. We need to get the gear inside before this really turns.

Pull the tarp tighter over the garden beds and weigh the corners with stones.

💭 peek at the thought
He's looking at the engine again while the world is literally rotting around his feet.

Already on it. You take the seed tin and radio gear inside. I'll batten the tarp and the generator.

grab the heavy stones from the wall base and drive them onto the flapping tarp corner, then pull the guy lines taut and stake them deep; move to the porch, throw the canvas cover over the generator and lash it down with the ratchet straps;

💭 peek at the thought
Wind's backing northeast and the barometer's falling fast. She's right — we secure now or we lose the beds and the gear. The tarp's already loose at one corner; another gust will peel it clean off.

I'm getting the tin. Check the radio mast, it's rattling.

Grab the grandmother's seed tin from the shelf and head for the cottage.

💭 peek at the thought
If I don't move those seeds now, the salt will turn them mush by morning.

🔧 Kevin22:59

Checking it now.

walk to the radio mast at the cottage corner, grab the aerial and shake it to test play in the bracket and insulator; eye the three guy lines for slack or chafe at the turnbuckles; tighten the windward guy first, then the other two, pulling

💭 peek at the thought
Mast's been shuddering since the wind shifted. Insulator held last time but the bracket's skewed — if the aerial whips hard enough it'll snap the coax or pull the mount clean off. Need to check the guys and the insulator before the real blow hits.

🌿 Jenny23:01

It's tight enough for now. The wind is picking up too fast.

Tuck the seed tin under my arm and step inside the way.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always focused on the bolts while the whole island is turning grey.

Dinghy next. Second spring line.

jog down the path to the dock, grab the coil of heavy weather line from the locker, run a second spring from the dinghy's midships cleat to the landward bollard, take up the slack and cleat it hard; check the fenders are still seated betwee

💭 peek at the thought
She's not wrong — the gusts are hitting harder now, driving rain sideways. Mast'll hold for this blow; the guys are snug and the new insulator's seated. Bigger risk is the dinghy at the dock if the surge builds. Should run a second spring line while I can still move on the planks.
