← Day 266

Apart — Kevin at the keeper's cottage, Jenny at the dock

Midday assessment and improvised care

Kevin is at the cottage checking the shortwave radio; Jenny is at the dock immobilized with a wrenched ankle.

Kevin attempted to use the shortwave radio to send a message to Tom, but the shattered insulator and failed coax prevented transmission. Jenny spent the afternoon at the dock inspecting the engine mounts and sketching sea beet morphology in her notebook.

🔧 Kevin — alone at the keeper's cottage

You stand at the radio table in the cottage, the letter to Tom folded beside the set. The aerial insulator you repaired holds. Outside the wind is steady northeast. You key the mic and call Tom's frequency, waiting for a break in the static.

🔧 Kevin23:04

Tom, this is Kevin on Sorrel. Do you copy? Over.

Wait for a response, mic in hand, eyes on the needle.

💭 peek at the thought
The static hisses like it’s trying to say something. I’ve got the letter ready. One line. It’s been in my pocket long enough.

🔧 Kevin23:08

Tom, this is Kevin. No urgency. Just wanted you to know I’m still here. The island’s holding. I’m holding. Over.

Set the mic down, unfold the letter, read the single line again, then fold it slow and put it back in my pocket.

💭 peek at the thought
Nothing but static and the wind on the aerial. He’s not listening. Or he’s not answering. Either way, the letter’s still in my pocket.

🔧 Kevin23:12

Kevin — open the radio log, write: 266 — 1247 local — 7.085 MHz — called Tom, no contact. Static S7. Barometer 977 hPa steady. Wind NE 15-20. Aerial holding. Close the book. Walk to the porch and watch the garden tarp snap in the gusts.

💭 peek at the thought
The radio eats the words. Always does. I should log the attempt, note the time, the frequency, the conditions. Habit. Discipline. The things that don't lie.

🌿 Jenny — alone at the dock

You sit on the dock locker with your right ankle elevated on a coil of rope, swelling visible above the improvised brace. The tide is rising fast. You have your notebook and can sketch the sea beet morphology from memory if the pain lets you concentrate.

🌿 Jenny23:03

Stay still, just watch the water.

pull the notebook and pencil from my pocket and begin own the salt glands on a sea beet leaf.

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer is dropping again. If that front hits before the boat comes, I'm stuck here with a useless leg.

🌿 Jenny23:07

Jenny — sharpen the pencil and shade the intricate venation of the sea beet.

💭 peek at the thought
My own is throbbing in time with the tide. I need to focus on the structure of the leaf, not the pain.

🌿 Jenny23:11

Jenny — record the barometric pressure and the rising tide in the margin of the sketch.

💭 peek at the thought
The water is hitting the pilings now. I need to get these transect notes down before the light fails me completely.
