Morning Rain and Seed Prep

Kevin and Jenny sit at the kitchen table as the rain begins to lash the roof. Jenny spreads out the damp heirloom seeds on paper towels while Kevin checks the barometer reading.

The heavy western rain hammers against the cottage as Kevin begins tending to Jenny's swollen ankle. He works to stabilize the joint using fabric and driftwood splints while Jenny attempts to manage the damp heirloom seed packets to prevent rot.

Ankle first. Seeds can wait ten minutes.

pull a chair around to her side of the table, set the barometer down, and reach for the fabric strips and driftwood splints we prepared yesterday

💭 peek at the thought
She's favoring the left side again. Ankle's worse than she's letting on. Barometer's holding steady at 976 but the rain's got teeth to it — wind'll shift before noon.

🌿 Jenny02:41

The pressure is dropping, Kevin. If I don't get these dry now, we lose the whole heirloom batch.

Jenny pulls the paper towels away from his hand and winces as she shifts her weight on the swollen ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks it's just the ankle, but if the humidity stays this high the seeds will mold before the boat even arrives.

I'll hold the ankle still while you spread the seeds. One pass, then we wrap. No arguing.

slide my forearm under her heel, lift just enough to take weight off the joint, and use my other hand to steady the paper towel stack as she resumes spreading the seeds in a single layer

💭 peek at the thought
She's right about the seeds — damp paper won't pull moisture fast enough, and if the pressure keeps falling we could lose germination. But she's gritting her teeth just sitting there. Wrap first, then we dry together — one hand on the ankle, one on the towels.

🌿 Jenny02:43

Fine. But don't move until this row is flat.

Jenny carefully lays the remaining seeds across the paper towel, her fingers trembling slightly as she ensures they don't overlap.

💭 peek at the thought
He's being practical again. It's irritating, but the ankle does throb.

🔧 Kevin02:44

Almost there. Keep going — I'm not moving.

maintain steady pressure under her heel, watch her fingertips align the last seeds edge-to-edge, and when the row is flat, shift my grip to cradle both ankle and paper towel so she can lift her hands free

💭 peek at the thought
Her knuckles are white around the towel edge. Pain's sharp now, but she won't break rhythm until the task's done. I can feel the heat through my shirt where my arm braces her heel — inflammation's setting in deep. One more pass, then wrap tight and sit. No more delay.

🌿 Jenny02:45

They're flat. Now get the splints before I start crying again.

Jenny pulls back, wiping seed dust from her palms, and looks at the rain-streaked window.

💭 peek at the thought
If these stay this damp, the tin needs to be closer to the stove, not the shelf.
