A Quiet Stretch

Back at the cottage.

Kevin attempts to pry open the waterlogged crate using the crowbar, but the rusted nails hold fast against the swollen wood. Jenny tries to inspect the crate for weak points but finds the wood too saturated and stubborn from the steady rain.

🔧 Kevin06:46

Kevin — walk onto the porch, set the torque wrench on the workbench, pull the crowbar off the wall hook, approach the waterlogged crate

💭 peek at the thought
Back under the porch roof. Rain drumming on the tin. Hands still smell of diesel and bronze shavings. The vibration's in the shaft, not the engine — felt it through the mount at half throttle. Need to torque the prop bolts, run it dry, confirm. Then the crate. Then the letter. One thing at a time.

way with the nails, Kevin. The wood is soft.

watch him pry the lid, holding my notebook against my chest.

💭 peek at the thought
He's finally looking at that crate again. The wood is swollen through with salt and rot.

🔧 Kevin06:48

Nail puller first. Don't want to shred the lid.

set the crowbar down, pick up the nail puller from the bench, work the claw under the first nail head on the crate lid, apply slow leverage

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Salt's eaten the grain. One wrong lever and the lid splinters, takes the contents with it. Crowbar's too blunt for this. Should use the nail puller first — work the heads, not the wood.

🌿 Jenny06:49

they've been in there too long.

crouch down as the first nail pops free with a dull thud.

💭 peek at the thought
way's being careful for once. If those seeds are moldy, I don't know what I'll do.

🔧 Kevin06:51

Kevin — work the second nail loose, same slow pull, listen for the wood to groan before it gives

💭 peek at the thought
First nail's free. Lid's not warped yet — still flat. If I keep this pace, might save the seal. Tins inside could be good. Cornd beef, coffee, maybe that box of hooks. Jenny's watching close. She's worried about what's spoiled. I am too — but not just the food. What if the letter from Tom's in there? No, he mailed his separately. Still.

🌿 Jenny06:51

easy. It's coming apart.

watch the gap in the wood, waiting for the tin to be revealed.

💭 peek at the thought
The sound of the wood popping makes my skin crawl. I hope the moisture didn't get inside.

🔧 Kevin06:52

Kevin — slide the nail puller under the rusted band, lever it sideways to break the seal, lift the lid clear and set it against the porch rail

💭 peek at the thought
Second nail out. Third. The lid lifts clean now — just the rusted band around the middle holding it. Salt crust flakes off as I pry. Smell hits me: brine, old tin, something sweet underneath. Coffee? No, darker. Molasses maybe. Or just the wood breathing after months sealed.

🌿 Jenny06:53

There it is.

reach into the crate, my fingers trembling slightly as I touch the cold metal of the tin.

💭 peek at the thought
Finally. The smell of old wood and damp earth is hitting me. Please let them be dry.

🔧 Kevin06:54

Kevin — reach in past the tins, lift the rusted 'E' tin careful with both hands, set it on the porch boards, pop the coffee jar seal and smell

💭 peek at the thought
Her fingers brush the first tin — corned beef, label salt-streaked but legible. Six of them stacked neat. Underneath, the glass jar: coffee, seal intact. Deeper, a coil of rope, half-inch three-strand, dry as bone inside its plastic wrap. And at the very bottom, a small metal tin, heavy, rusted, marked with a faded 'E'. Grandmother's seed tin. The one she dropped on the dock weeks back. I thought it was lost in the surf. The sea brought it back.

🌿 Jenny06:55

It's heavy. That is good.

peel back the self-amalgamating tape slowly, holding my breath.

💭 peek at the thought
The metal is cold. If the seal held, maybe the last year wasn't for.
