The Storm Breaks Early

Kevin and Jenny meet on the porch as the first heavy drops of rain hit the roof. The wind howls through the radio mast.

Kevin took the dinghy out to test the Yanmar engine under load, confirming the vibration was gone. Jenny spent the afternoon securing the garden against the coming storm and checking the barometer as the air pressure began to drop.

🔧 Kevin07:42

Engine's clean. Took the dinghy out, pulled the net. Vibration's gone — prop shaft's true. Weather's turning proper now.

Step onto the porch, wipe oil-stained hands on trousers, lean against the doorframe watching the sky darken.

💭 peek at the thought
The vibration's gone. Engine holds true. But this wind's got teeth — barometer's still dropping and the mast's singing. She's watching me like she's waiting for something I haven't said yet.

The barometer is at 988 and falling. We're getting a deluge.

wipe the grit from my palms and glance at the seed tin on the table.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping too fast; if it pours now, the seeds will be washed away before they even take.

988. Dropped three in four hours. Southwest swell'll hit the anchorage by midnight. Dinghy's secured with the second spring. Generator's lashed. We're buttoned up.

Glance at the seed tin, then at her hands — clean, steady — before meeting her eyes.

💭 peek at the thought
She's tracking the pressure like I taught her. Good. The tin's sealed — she knows that. What she's not saying is louder than what she is.

🌿 Jenny07:47

I should have checked the stakes on the shade cloth again.

trace the rusted rim of the tin with my thumb, watching the wind catch the trees.

💭 peek at the thought
If the storm hits as hard as the barometer says, the garden will be a mud pit by morning.

🔧 Kevin07:47

Stakes held at noon. Extra roll's deployed. Tomatoes are covered. You did the work, Jen. It's holding.

Cross the porch in two steps, rest a hand on her shoulder — brief, calloused, warm through her shirt — then turn to the radio shelf and flip the squelch open.

💭 peek at the thought
She's taking responsibility for something that held. The cloth's still up — I checked it myself at noon. She's looking for fault where there isn't one, or she's looking at me looking at her.

🌿 Jenny07:49

I know. I just... I need to clear the way off the seedlings first.

reach for the tin, feeling the weight of my grandmother's seeds against my palm.

💭 peek at the thought
He's right about the tomatoes, but the soil is still too slick for the new peppers.

🔧 Kevin07:49

Seedlings are under the tarp. Corners are staked. You can see it from here — nothing's lifting.

Cover her hand where it rests on the tin with mine, pressure light but firm, then pull back and lift the receiver. "Calling all stations, this is Victor Kilo Four Zero Zero. Over."

💭 peek at the thought
She's touching the tin like it's a pulse. Grandmother's seeds — the one she read the letter in. She hasn't opened it. Doesn't need to. She's holding the silence between us like it's something she can fix with her hands.

🌿 Jenny07:51

The barometer is dropping too fast. It's going topour.

open the tin, the rusted hinges screeching in the quiet kitchen.

💭 peek at the thought
If I don't plant now, the tin is just a box of dead hopes.
