Night of the rising barometer
You and Jenny return to the cottage as the sky turns a bruised purple. The smell of rain is heavy on the wind, and the radio crackles with static in the quiet.
Kevin secured the aerial and porch as wind gusted hard, then came inside. Jenny moved the seed packets and notebook closer to the stove. A tree fell across the path in the woods.
The barometer is dropping. We need to move the seeds inside.
Move the notebook and the seed packets to the edge of the wood stove.

On it. Generator cover, radio battery, water tank overflow — I'll run the perimeter.
walk to the porch and pull the plastic tarp tighter over the generator and seed tin, then check the rain tank overflow valve and secure it, then move the canvas rolls inside the kitchen doorway

Be careful with the tarp, the wood is getting slick.
Spread the damp seed packets out on the newspaper closer to the stove.

Mm. Got it.
crouch to re-tie the tarp corners with the new half-inch rope, pulling knots tight and checking the generator exhaust isn't covered, then test the porch boards with a boot before stepping fully onto each one

The wind is picking up fast. Get inside.
Pick up the bowl of boiled limpets and head to the table.

Aerial first. Right behind you.
climb the short ladder to the roof bracket and lash the shortwave aerial down with a length of the new rope, cinching it tight against the insulator, then descend and pull the porch door shut against the gust
