Evening meal and rising tide

The tide is coming in, covering the pools as you return inside to eat the boiled limpets.

Kevin attempted to replace the radio coax, but the rising tide and slick conditions made the work impossible. Jenny focused on sketching tide pool succulents as the water began to cover the shelves. A wooden crate washed up in the surf near the beach.

Limpets are ready. Coffee's on.

walk into the kitchen and set the pot of boiled limpets on the table, then pour two mugs of coffee

💭 peek at the thought
The limpets are the one thing that went right today. Back's screaming, hands are raw from the crowbar, and that coax connection at the masthead is still loose — but the limpets are hot and the coffee's strong.

🌿 Jenny23:59

Thanks.

sit at the table, pick up a fork, and start eating the limpets.

💭 peek at the thought
My legs are cramping from the crouching and the humidity is so heavy it feels like breathing through a wet wool blanket.

🔧 Kevin23:59

Kevin — sit opposite her and start on my own limpets, chewing slowly

💭 peek at the thought
She's eating. Good. The medevac papers are in my bag by the bunk — need to put them on the table before she turns in, said I would. Back's still knotted from the dock. Masthead coax still loose. But she's eating.

🌿 Jenny00:01

Jenny — chew slowly, looking out the window at the rising tide.

💭 peek at the thought
The silence is louder than the waves today. I wonder if the seeds in the tin are still viable after this.

🔧 Kevin00:02

Tide's turning early.

set my fork down, reach into my jacket pocket, and pull out the folded medevac authorization forms, setting them on the table between us

💭 peek at the thought
Tide's coming up fast. Dock work's done for the day. Masthead coax still needs finishing — but not in this light, not with my hands shaking from the crowbar work. Papers first. Then maybe the lime-cement mix if the humidity holds.

🌿 Jenny00:03

What for?

stop eating and look down at the forms.

💭 peek at the thought
Why is he pulling those out now? The barometer is still rising. Is he just tired of waiting?

🔧 Kevin00:03

Coast guard said the supply boat's diverted. No ETA. These are if one of us needs off this rock before the next boat.

keep my eyes on the forms, not on her face

💭 peek at the thought
She's asking straight. No accusation. Just the question. I've had these eleven months and didn't say a word. Coast guard said supply boat diverted, no ETA. I didn't tell her that either.

🌿 Jenny00:05

We have enough food, Kevin.

set the fork down and touch the edge of the paper with a damp finger.

💭 peek at the thought
The boat is gone. Five days of nothing, and he's already talking about leaving.

🔧 Kevin00:05

Not about food.

tap the top form with one calloused finger, the nail split down the middle

💭 peek at the thought
She thinks it's about supplies. It's not. It's about the thing I can't say — the water in my chest when the swell picks up, the way my hands still shake at night. The Bay of Biscay doesn't care about food stores.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny00:07

Are you sick?

pull my hand back from the table and cross my arms over my lap.

💭 peek at the thought
He's looking at the paper, not me. He's scared of the isolation more than I.
