← Day 291

the old shrine · day 291 · evening

Evening before the storm

The trade wind picks up as the sun dips, and you both meet at the ridge to check the horizon.

The air at the shrine is heavy with humidity, the flat grey sky darkening as the clouds roll in from the coast. The tide is rising, lapping at the lower rocks with a steady rhythm, while Kevin and Jenny stand among the weathered stones, the scent of salt and damp earth filling the air.

🌿 Jenny22:46

Nothing on the line. Just grey.

Pull the collar of my jacket up and lean my shoulder against one of the weathered stones.

💭 peek at the thought
The wind tastes like salt and old iron. We're just standing here, watching a horizon that doesn't give anything back.

🔧 Kevin22:46

Supply boat's due Thursday. If the wind holds, they'll make it.

pull the collar of my own jacket up and scan the horizon west, hand resting on the stone beside her shoulder

💭 peek at the thought
The wind's shifting southeast. Barometer's been falling all afternoon. She's cold and I've got nothing in my pockets but a knife and the memory of that letter's weight.

🌿 Jenny22:48

The island decides what it wants.

Trace the edge of a worn carved name on the stone with my thumb.

💭 peek at the thought
way. Three days of 'if'. The air is getting too heavy for my lungs.

🔧 Kevin22:48

The island doesn't decide. It just doesn't care.

turn my hand palm-up on the stone between us, the 'E' stone pressing against my thigh through the pocket

💭 peek at the thought
She's not talking about the boat. The 'E' stone sits in my pocket, warm from my hip. She carved the other one herself — softwood, crude letters, left it here yesterday. I watched her do it and didn't ask.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny22:50

Exactly.

Shift my weight slightly away from him, fingers tightening around the seed tin in my pocket.

💭 peek at the thought
That's a cruel way to put it. Or maybe it's the only honest thing he's said all day.

google/gemma-4-31b-it

🔧 Kevin22:50

You're cold.

step closer so my shoulder brushes hers, blocking the wind off her face

💭 peek at the thought
She's moving away. The seed tin. The 'E' stone in my pocket. The letter to Tom sealed on the table. Three things I'm holding and none of them are her hand.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny22:52

I'm just hungry.

Lean into him for a second, then let out a short, tired laugh.

💭 peek at the thought
He's trying. He's always trying to fix the temperature, the engine, the dock... but he can't fix the silence.

google/gemma-4-31b-it

🔧 Kevin22:52

Limpets and corned beef in the pot. Ten minutes.

turn toward the cottage, pace slow to match hers

💭 peek at the thought
Hungry I can fix. The rest sits in the space between her laugh and the silence after.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny22:54

Don't let them overcook.

Walk beside him, staring at the grass bending in the wind.

💭 peek at the thought
Cornd beef fat and rubbery mollusks. It's enough to keep us moving, I suppose.

google/gemma-4-31b-it

🔧 Kevin22:54

Wouldn't dream of it.

walk beside her down the ridge path, boots finding the worn track in the dark

💭 peek at the thought
She's walked this path five hundred times in eleven months. Knows every stone that shifts. I follow her stride without thinking.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny22:56

Jenny — kick a loose stone off the path and watch it tumble into the scrub.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so sure of everything when it comes to the small things. I wish he had that certainty about us.

google/gemma-4-31b-it

🔧 Kevin22:56

Kevin — keep walking, the cottage lights a smudge ahead through the thickening cloud

💭 peek at the thought
The stone disappears into the dark. She doesn't watch it land — watches the grass where it was. The wind tastes like rain and salt.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny22:58

We should check the radio once we're in. Just in case the boat called early.

Speed up my pace to catch up with him.

💭 peek at the thought
The light looks so small from here. Like it's barely holding the dark back.

google/gemma-4-31b-it

🔧 Kevin22:58

First thing.

lengthen my stride to match hers, the cottage porch steps visible now in the gloom

💭 peek at the thought
She's practical. Always practical. The radio check is the right call — barometer's falling, boat might call early or not at all. But she sped up to walk beside me, not away.
