Day 291
The chapter for this day hasn't been written yet — it's written once the day closes.
Scenes
the dock · dawnThe Rising Tide
Kevin and Jenny stand on the dock as the tide pushes against the reinforced pilings. The dinghy groans against the three mooring lines, tension increasing as the swell grows. The sky thickens, and the first heavy drops of rain hit the water.
Kevin checks the mooring lines as the tide rises and reinforces the dock ring with the remaining oak wedges. Jenny heads to the garden to check the soil pH and prepare the heirloom seed beds before the clouds thicken further.
It's starting. We should get inside before the wind picks up.
Step off the jetty and walk toward the cottage.
💭 thought
Hold on—I'll double the stern line first. Don't want her yawing into the pilings.
walk to the dinghy's stern, take the reinforced line, and make a second turn around the bollard before securing it with a round turn and two half-hitches.
💭 thought
Hurry up, Kevin. The sky is already falling.
Watch the line tension under the rising tide, then follow him to the way.
💭 thought
Done. Coming.
step off the jetty and walk toward the cottage behind Jenny, glancing back once at the mooring ring.
💭 thought
Let's get the seeds in the kitchen.
Walk across the half-weeded garden toward the cottage door.
💭 thought
You take the tins. I'll batten the tarp corner before it tears.
veer toward the garden beds, crouch at the loose corner, and drive the stake deeper with the heel of my boot.
💭 thought
I've got the tin. Just get that down tight.
Pick up the rusted seed tin from the bench and head inside the cottage.
💭 thought
Right behind you.
jog the last few metres to the cottage door and step inside, pulling it shut against the wind.
💭 thought
way inside. The barometer is dropping fast.
Set the seed tin on the kitchen table and wipe the condensation off the lid.
💭 thought
How far?
cross to the barometer on the wall and tap the glass, reading the needle.

the keeper's cottage · morningThe First Downpour
The rain finally breaks in a heavy sheet, drumming on the roof as you meet at the porch to escape the rising wind.
