The Arrival of the Rain

The first heavy drops of rain hit the tin roof of the cottage with a loud thud. Kevin and Jenny retreat inside as the wind turns and the storm finally breaks in.

The heavy air sits still over the cottage as the barometer continues its slow drop. Kevin checks the tension on the mooring lines against the rising tide while Jenny meticulously examines the soil conditions in the damp heat.

Close the door tight. I don't want the spray getting in the kitchen.

Walk to the kitchen counter and pull the seed tin closer to the center of the table, away from the edge.

💭 peek at the thought
Finally. The tension in the air was becoming unbearable. Now we're trapped in these two rooms with nothing but the sound of the rain and the things we aren't saying.

Aye. Got it.

pull the porch door shut and throw the heavy iron bolt, then walk to the kitchen window to check the dock through the rain

💭 peek at the thought
The storm's hitting harder than the barometer suggested. Rain's already driving sideways against the porch. Need to check the dock lines once the worst passes — that mooring ring's still not right.

🌿 Jenny23:02

The boat will hold, Kevin. I checked the lines twice.

Sit at the kitchen table and open the notebook to a blank page, picking up a pencil.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always looking at the water as if it's going to give him answers. It's just salt and movement.

🔧 Kevin23:02

Aye. I'll check 'em when it eases. For now, tea?

move to the wood stove, lift the kettle, and pour two chipped mugs from the pot already warming on the back burner

💭 peek at the thought
She's trying to steady herself. Good. But I know what those lines feel like under strain — and the ring's still loose in its mortise. I'll wait till the wind drops, then go out with the mallet and fresh wedges.

🌿 Jenny23:04

Please.

Take the mug and wrap both hands around the ceramic, letting the warmth sink into my palms.

💭 peek at the thought
I'm too tired to even reach for it, but the heat of the mug might stop my hands from shaking.

🔧 Kevin23:04

Storm'll blow through by midnight. Barometer's steady now.

set my own mug on the table, pull out the chair opposite her, and sit — close enough the steam rises between us

💭 peek at the thought
She's cold. The pressure drop's got her joints aching again. I should've stoked the stove harder before the front hit. The letter to Tom sits at my elbow — sealed, wax cooling. She hasn't asked. Won't. That's her way.
