Morning in the Fog

The fog refuses to lift as the tide reaches its lowest point. You meet at the dock to discuss the day's tasks.

The air inside the cottage is thick with the smell of woodsmoke and damp grain. Jenny sets two bowls on the wooden table, her movements slightly stiff as she favors her injured ankle. Kevin ladles the thick porridge into the bowls, the metal spoon clinking softly against the ceramic pot.

Lines are sound. Forward spring took the strain clean. You want the garden first or the radio check?

lean against the dock post, arms folded, watching the fog bank roll over the water

💭 peek at the thought
Fog's thick enough to taste. Can't see the lighthouse, can't see the supply boat if it came early. Lines held through the night — oakum and epoxy did their work. Jenny's moving slow today, ankle still bothering her. Should've taped it yesterday. She won't ask.

Neither. I'm starving. Let's go back and eat first, then I'm heading for the ridge.

Shift my weight off my bad ankle and gesture toward the cottage.

💭 peek at the thought
He looks so certain when he's talking about lines and knots. I can't think about the radio or the garden until I've eaten something that isn't rubbery.

Porridge and the last of the corned beef. Ten minutes.

turn toward the cottage, pace slowed to match her limp

💭 peek at the thought
She's favouring the left side hard. Ankle's worse than she'll admit. Ridge walk's two hours round trip with elevation — stupid on a bad joint in this visibility. But she won't stay put if I say so. Better to feed her first, then argue.

🌿 Jenny05:52

I can keep up, Kev.

Walk slightly faster, ignoring the throb in my ankle, and follow him up the path.

💭 peek at the thought
He's doing that thing again. Matching my pace so I don't feel the limp, which just makes me feel the limp more.

🔧 Kevin05:54

Didn't say you couldn't.

walk up the path, not looking back, knowing she's close behind

💭 peek at the thought
She can't. But she'll fall before she admits it. Path's slick with fog-drip on the shale — one wrong step and she's down for weeks. I'll carry the radio up to the ridge myself after breakfast. She can sit the high ground and log the Carex count from the cairn. Compromise.

🌿 Jenny05:54

Just don't burn the porridge.

Let out a short, soft laugh and catch up to him.

💭 peek at the thought
That stubborn, quiet pride. We are both just circling the same gaps in the conversation.

🔧 Kevin05:56

Won't burn it. Promise.

push open the cottage door and step inside, holding it for her to pass through

💭 peek at the thought
She laughed. Actual sound. First time in weeks that wasn't tired or sharp. Fog's still low, but for a second it felt like the old rhythm — her teasing, me pretending not to hear it. Don't ruin it by overthinking.

🌿 Jenny05:56

I'll get the bowls.

Step over the threshold, drop my notebook on the table, and head for the kitchen.

💭 peek at the thought
The smell of woodsmoke and old paper is grounding. I need to sit down before my legs give out.
