Preparation for the falling pressure

Kevin sits at the porch workbench inspecting the oak stock for the new sprit and boom. Jenny gathers buckets of wood ash from the hearth while the barometer shows a slow drop to 1019 hPa.

The morning air is heavy and humid as the pressure continues its slow descent. Kevin works on the dinghy's timbers under the porch while Jenny treats the garden soil with ash to prepare for the coming rain. A light breeze picks up from the east, carrying the scent of salt and ozone.

🌿 Jenny21:59

The barometer is dipping. I'm going to start the garden now before the storm hits.

carry buckets of wood ash from the kitchen to the garden beds.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping. If it falls further, that rain is going to be relentless. I need to get this ash into the ground before the water gets heavy; the soil is so sour it's practically weeping.

🔧 Kevin21:59

Take the radio. Channel 16 if the path goes.

finish planing the sprit, then walk to the garden with the remaining oak stock for the boom

💭 peek at the thought
Barometer's dropped two millibars since yesterday. That's not slow — that's the squall warning. She's right to move on the garden, but she's moving alone with heavy buckets on a slick path. The spring track turns to grease when the pressure drops like this. I should go with her, but the sprit needs its final plane and the boltrope won't lace itself. If the wind picks up past Force 5, I lose the daylight for both. Dinghy's the ticket off this rock. Garden can wait. But she's already walking.

🌿 Jenny22:01

I'll keep it on my belt. Just in case.

pick up shortwave radio from the shelf and tuck it into my waistband pocket.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so worried about the radio, but I'm worried about the pH. If I don't get this ash worked in, the rain will just wash it into the sea.

🔧 Kevin22:01

Shout if the wind shifts northeast. That's the dirty quarter.

plane the sprit to final taper, check grain run, then lift the boom stock and walk to the garden

💭 peek at the thought
Good. She took it. That's one less thing to worry about. The path to the garden crosses the spring runoff — wet slate and algae. With the barometer at 1019 and falling, the tide'll push back up that track by mid-afternoon. She knows the island. She's stubborn. I'll plane the sprit true, grab the boom stock, and meet her there. Two hands move ash faster than one. And if the squall hits while she's exposed on those beds, I want to be close enough to haul her back.

🌿 Jenny22:03

I'll keep an eye on the clouds.

walk to the garden carrying the buckets of wood ash.

💭 peek at the thought
The air is getting heavy. If that wind shifts, it's going to be a downpour. I need to neutralize this grit before the rain leaches everything else away.

🔧 Kevin22:03

Kevin — plane the sprit to final taper, check grain run, lift the boom stock, take the upper path to the garden

💭 peek at the thought
She's moving steady. Good boots, good balance. The clouds are already stacking west — bruised purple underbellies, moving fast for 1019. Could be Force 6 by noon. The garden beds are exposed on the south slope; no windbreak since the old gorse died back. She'll be bent double spreading ash in a gale if she stays too long. I'll finish the sprit, grab the boom blank, and cut across the upper path. Shorter, steeper, but stays above the spring surge. Meet her at the beds. Two buckets won't cover half the plot anyway — she'll need the second load from the woodshed ash. Might as well haul it now.

🌿 Jenny22:05

I'm starting on the beds.

spread wood ash over the acidic patches in the garden.

💭 peek at the thought
1019 and it's sliding. If it hits 1018, the spring path is gone. I need to get this ash spread before the sky opens up.

🔧 Kevin22:05

Hood up. Rain's fifteen minutes out.

carry the boom stock to the cottage porch, set up the planing stop, begin roughing the taper

💭 peek at the thought
She's at it. Good. The ash'll need working in — not just scattered — but one thing at a time. The boom stock's heavy green oak, eighty pounds if it's an ounce. Should've roughed it out at the bench. Too late now. Path's slick underfoot, slate gone to snot with this humidity. Knees don't like the climb like they used to. Barometer's still falling. Wind's backing southwest — that'll drive rain hard up the slope. She's wearing the oilskin but no hood. Stubborn. I'll carry the boom blank to the cottage porch, plane it there under cover, then help her rake the ash in before the downpour. Dinghy can wait one more tide.
