The First Drops

The first heavy drops of rain hit the dusty leaves just as you meet at the edge of the beds. The wind has shifted, now rattling the leaves of the unplanted plants.

The pressure continues to drop as the sky thickens. Kevin moved to the dock to work on the dinghy's hull, while Jenny stayed at the cottage to organize the seed tin and prepare the garden plots.

🌿 Jenny22:07

Kevin, it's starting. We need to get the tools inside.

quickly shovel the remaining wood ash into the trenches and begin mixing it with the topsoil.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping too fast. If I don't get this ash worked in, the rain will just wash it into the sea before it does anything.

Right behind you. Grab the plane and the spokeshave off the bench — I'll get the canvas and the oak stock.

gather the plane, spokeshave, and unfinished boom from the porch workbench, then grab the rolled lug sail canvas and remaining oak stock from the shelter, moving everything inside the cottage doorway

💭 peek at the thought
The rain's here earlier than I'd like. The sprit's done but the boom still needs its taper finished, and the boltrope won't lace itself. If the wind picks up like the barometer says, working on the porch becomes a liability — canvas acts like a sail in a gust. Jenny's moving fast on the ash; soil's too wet to work proper once the clay saturates. Need to call it on the garden tools and get the spar work under cover before the deck gets slick.

🌿 Jenny22:09

I'm coming! Just a second!

drop the shovel and scramble to the porch to grab the plane and spokeshave, then hurry inside the cottage.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always so focused on the boat. The boat is the way off the island, but the garden is the way to stay. I'm shaking from hunger, but I can't leave the bed exposed.

🔧 Kevin22:09

Got the heavy stuff. Go on.

carry the rolled lug sail canvas and the remaining oak stock through the cottage doorway, set them on the floor just inside, then step back to pull the door shut against the wind

💭 peek at the thought
She's got the hand tools. The canvas and oak stock are heavier — better I take them so she's not wrestling wet duck in the doorway. The rain's coming down harder now, big drops kicking up dust. Once we're inside I can finish the boom taper at the table and she can dry off. Radio check after — the French forecast mentioned a frontal passage by evening.

🌿 Jenny22:11

Thanks. I'm getting the tools.

grab the plane and spokeshave from the workbench, then run into the cottage and kick the door shut.

💭 peek at the thought
The rain is coming down now. If I don't get that ash in, the pH will be ruined for good. I'm so tired, my arms are heavy.

🔧 Kevin22:11

Kettle on?

walk to the wall barometer, tap the glass, read the needle

💭 peek at the thought
Door's shut. Rain hammering the roof now. Good — the sprint paid off. Boom's still got the last third to taper, then the oarlock fitting, then the boltrope lacing if the light holds. Jenny's shaking water off her hands at the table. She looks like she wants to say something about the garden, or maybe about the silence yesterday. I don't know how to start that conversation. The radio's on the shelf, still picking up static. Barometer's on the wall. Let's see what the pressure's doing.
