The Turning Tides

The tide has reached its lowest point and begins to creep back toward the pilings of the dock.

Kevin finished seating the final dock plank just as the tide surged up the jetty, then retreated to the cottage with his tools. Jenny sketched the rising water around the pilings before closing her notebook and heading inside as the swell reached the new timber.

Jenny — pick up the notebook and watch the water lap the rotting jetty.

💭 peek at the thought
The tide is coming back faster than he can ever fix those planks.

🔧 Kevin00:55

Tide's coming in. Going to get the last two planks seated before the dock's underwater.

walk to the dock with crowbar and replacement planks

💭 peek at the thought
The tide's turning. Water's already kissing the pilings. If I'm going to finish the dock planks, it's now or wait another cycle. My back's screaming from this morning but the coax held — that's something. Jenny's quiet. Watching. She does that.

🌿 Jenny00:57

Be careful. The wood is like glass.

Trace the edge of the tide in the notebook as it moves further up the shore.

💭 peek at the thought
He's going to slip and break a wrist on that moss-covered wood.

🔧 Kevin00:57

Aye. Testing each step.

kneel at the first rotten plank, pry it up with the crowbar, test the joist beneath with a knuckle before setting the new timber

💭 peek at the thought
She's not wrong. Rot goes deep. Stepped on a soft spot yesterday and nearly went through. But the planks are cut, the holes are bored, and the tide waits for no one.

🌿 Jenny00:59

The water is rising fast. Don't stay too long.

Sketch the way the water swirls around the pilings.

💭 peek at the thought
If he falls, I'm not strong enough to pull him from the current.

🔧 Kevin01:00

Last one. Then I'm off.

move to the second rotten plank near the waterline, pry it free, clear the debris, seat the replacement and drive the screws home fast

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. The swell's pushing it up the pilings faster than the tide table said. One plank down, one to go. The joist held on this one — solid core. Next one's the tricky one, right at the low-water mark where the rot's worst.

🌿 Jenny01:03

Get back inside before the swell catches you.

Close the notebook and watch the first wave hit the new wood.

💭 peek at the thought
He's rushing it and the sea doesn't take apologies.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin01:03

Done.

gather tools and replacement planks, walk back up the dock toward the cottage before the next swell reaches the jetty

💭 peek at the thought
Screws bit clean. Plank's seated. Water's licking the new wood already — swell's running ahead of the tide. Time to go.
