The Rising Tide Returns

The tide begins its slow turn back inland, water lapping the pilings of the dock. The rain slows to a fine mist, leaving the air heavy and humid.

Kevin attempts to secure the radio coax at the masthead, but the rising tide makes the dock slick and dangerous. Jenny stays at the cottage to organize the damp heirloom seeds and review the medical forms. The sky thickens as the pressure continues to drop.

Thirteen feet up. Mist condensing on the steel, beads running down the rungs. My boots find the flats, not the edges. Center pin's still proud three mill — saw it clear yesterday. Just need the sheath seated and the locking ring snug. Don't look down. Don't think about the water.

Masthead level. Rain-slick aluminum, the old coax connector hanging loose off the side. My fingers are cold but dry enough. Center pin protrudes — three millimeters exactly like I knew it would. Sheath needs pushing home, then the locking ring quarter-turn. Two minutes work if the connection doesn't fight me.
