Night at the cottage

The air remains heavy and still as the tide reaches its low. You gather in the kitchen to discuss the upcoming supply boat arrival in four days.

The air is heavy with humidity as the cloud cover thickens over the flat sky. The tide is out, exposing the slick rocks of the tide pools, while the island prepares for the coming supply boat in four days.

Supply boat in four days. Mooring ring needs the doubler plate and through-bolts torqued proper. Garden tarp corner's loose. Your ankle.

Walk to the porch, pull the torque wrench and 10mm sockets from the shelf, check the doubler plate and four 150mm stainless through-bolts with washers and nyloc nuts stacked by the door.

💭 peek at the thought
Four days. That's not much time to get the mooring ring solid enough for the crane. The oak wedges split, the epoxy's gone. Need longer stainless through-bolts with a doubler plate — got the plate, got the bolts. Just need to drill clean and torque to spec before the boat shows. And the garden tarp corner's still flapping. Jenny's ankle. The letter in the oilskin bag. Too many things.

I'll check the tarp after I finish the mustard sketch. The ankle is fine.

Trace the serration of a mustard leaf in the notebook with a shaky hand.

If the boat doesn't come, I'll run out of lime and these seeds will just rot in the acidic dirt anyway.

Ankle's not fine. But you'll do the sketch first. I'll start on the mooring ring — drill the mortise, set the doubler plate, four through-bolts torqued to 35Nm. Tarp can wait until after.

Pick up the heavy drill and 10mm bit, head down to the dock with the doubler plate, bolts, washers, nylocs, and torque wrench in the tool bag.

She's tracing with a shaky hand and calling it fine. The ankle's not fine. The tarp's not fine. The mooring ring's not fine. But she'll do the sketch first because that's how she works — observes, records, then acts. I'll drill the mortise clean, set the plate, drive the bolts. Four days is enough if the weather holds.

Jenny — close the notebook with a sharp snap and stare at the door.

He thinks he can just list the chores and the injuries like a manifest. I'm not a piece of equipment to be maintained.

Kevin — walk out the door, down the porch steps, across the grass to the dock with the tool bag. Set up at the mooring ring. Chuck the 10mm bit. Drill out the old mortise holes clean through the stringer for the through-bolts.

💭 peek at the thought
That snap wasn't about the notebook. She heard me. Heard the dismissal. Or maybe she's just done being told what she'll do. Either way, the door's between us now. I'll drill the mortise clean. That's what I can fix.
