Squall passes, work resumes

The rain eases to a drizzle. Kevin and Jenny stand under the porch, steam rising from their clothes. The garden tarp corner flaps loose again. The water tank is full. Kevin's letter to Tom sits on the table, one sentence written. Jenny's seed tin rests beside it. They have thirty minutes of light before the Yanmar test and the planting.

Kevin attempted to secure the garden tarp against the rain, failing to pin it down effectively despite his efforts. Jenny used the softened soil to plant several heirloom seeds in the garden. They returned inside to prepare a meal of mackerel together as the rain continued to intensify.

🌿 Jenny23:40

The soil is soft enough now. Wait a minute.

Reach into grandmother's tin, pull out a single sea beet seed, and walk to the garden bed.

💭 peek at the thought
If I don't plant that seed today, I'm just a woman watching a garden rot.

🔧 Kevin23:41

Tarp's still loose. Want me to stake it before the test?

walk to the garden bed, pull the hand trowel from the belt loop, and drive a fresh stake into the softened earth at the flapping corner

💭 peek at the thought
Watch her move — deliberate, unhurried. One seed. One spot. She's not planting for yield; she's planting to remember how.

🌿 Jenny23:41

yeah, pin it down. I'm doing one thing.

Poke a small hole in the garden bed with a finger, drop in the sea beet seed, and press the earth down over it.

💭 peek at the thought
way's always trying to be helpful while I'm overthinking the pH.

🔧 Kevin23:42

On it.

pull the loose tarp corner tight, drive the stake deep with the mallet, then loop and tie the cord off clean to keep it from lifting again

💭 peek at the thought
She's talking to the dirt now. I'll hold the line — literally.

🌿 Jenny23:43

thanks. Let's get inside and check the water level.

Wipe the mud off my hands on my jeans and walk back toward the cottage.

💭 peek at the thought
at least one is in the ground. even if the island just eats it.

🔧 Kevin23:45

388 litres this morning. Probably topped off.

follow her inside, shake the rain off my sleeves, and lean against the doorframe watching the gauge

💭 peek at the thought
Tank's full — heard it gurgling earlier. She wants to see the number. Fine by me; keeps her moving.

🌿 Jenny23:45

Good. I'm starving anyway.

Walk into the kitchen, open the cupboard, and look for the tin of mackerel.

💭 peek at the thought
The tank is nearly full. If it keeps raining, I'll be way to the brim soon.

🔧 Kevin23:46

Mackerel's on the second shelf. Corned beef beside it if you want fat for the limpets.

step to the stove, lift the lid, and check the fire — add a split of dry wood to bring the heat back up

💭 peek at the thought
Five tins left. She takes one, I'll take the other. Simple math.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny23:47

Mackerel sounds good. Maybe some of those limpets too.

Grab the tin of way, set it on the table, and start looking for the opener.

💭 peek at the thought
I'll stick to the fish. I need the oil for energy.

🔧 Kevin23:49

Drawer left of the radio.

pull the cast iron skillet from the hook, set it on the stove top, and let it heat while she works the tin

💭 peek at the thought
Opener's in the drawer by the radio. Always is.
