Breakfast and the letter

They are at the kitchen table, steam rising from tin mugs. The letter to Tom sits unsealed beside a jar of coffee. Outside, the trade wind rattles the shade cloth over the tomato rows. The barometer on the wall reads 1036 hPa and falling.

Kevin flushed the rain tank inlet and outlet valves, finding them clear. Jenny attempted to test the garden soil pH but dropped the kit and ruined the strips. Both then went about their separate tasks as planned.

🌿 Jenny23:19

The pressure is dropping, Kevin. We should check the rain tank valves before it turns.

Take a slow sip of cold coffee and stare at the thickening clouds over the north ridge.

💭 peek at the thought
The soil is too acidic, 5.6, but the seed is already in the ground and I can't take it back.

🔧 Kevin23:19

Aye. After breakfast.

finish the cold coffee in two swallows, set the mug down hard, and reach for the letter to Tom with a calloused thumb brushing the unsealed flap

💭 peek at the thought
She's right — falling pressure means rain, maybe heavy. The tank valves haven't been checked since the last storm. Water's the one thing we can't manufacture.

🌿 Jenny23:21

The boat isn't here for eight days, focus on the garden.

Stand up and grab the notebook and pencil, needing to sketch the sea beet morphology before the light fails.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always in a rush to tell the mainland before we even check the sky.

🔧 Kevin23:22

Valves take ten minutes. Garden gets the rest of the day.

push back from the table, letter untouched, and pull on boots by the door

💭 peek at the thought
Garden first, she says. Always the garden. But the tank feeds us both and the valves are stiff from salt. Eight days is a long time if the inlet clogs or the outlet fails.

🌿 Jenny23:23

I'll take the pH kit. Don't forget the trowel.

way the seed tin into my apron and follow him out the porch into the damp air.

💭 peek at the thought
At least he's moving, even if it's just to the tank.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin23:23

Trowel's broke. Taking the spade.

grab the spade leaning against the garden wall, nod at the rain tank against the back wall of the cottage, and walk toward it with the spade over one shoulder

💭 peek at the thought
She's already moving, tin in apron, notebook ready. The trowel's broken — snapped at the neck yesterday prying limestone. I need the spade instead.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny23:25

Be careful with the threads, the wood is getting soft.

Walk beside him to the tank, watching the way the clouds are bruising the horizon.

💭 peek at the thought
If he uses the spade for the valves, he'll just tear the seal up more.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin23:25

Won't force it.

set the spade down, crouch at the tank base, and work the inlet valve back and forth with two fingers — gentle, feeling for grit, listening for the rubber seat

💭 peek at the thought
She's not wrong — the tank's wooden collar has gone punky at the inlet. Brass threads in rotting wood. One hard turn and it strips.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny23:27

It's probably sediment in the threads from the last rain.

Kneel in the dirt, opening the pH kit from my bag and waiting for the garden bed to settle.

💭 peek at the thought
He's being careful for once, but the pressure is still dropping too fast.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin23:27

Mm.

crack the valve open a hair, let a cup of water splash into the dirt to flush the seat, then close it slow — feeling the rubber kiss clean — before moving to the outlet valve and repeating

💭 peek at the thought
Sediment's likely. The roof grit washes straight in. Valve seat's probably fouled too.
