Night at the shrine

Kevin and Jenny sit together at the old shrine as full darkness settles. The storm lantern casts a small circle of light on the standing stones. The air is windless and heavy at 29°C. The barometer holds at 1031 hPa. The tide is high, surf a low roar. They have not eaten since midday.

The air is heavy and thick with the scent of salt and damp earth as the clouds close in over the shrine. The tide retreats rapidly, exposing the slick, dark rocks of the tide pools, while the atmospheric pressure continues to drop, signaling a coming front.

We should go back. I have some tinned mackerel and that sea beet left before I start eating with my fingers.

Close the notebook, click the lantern off, and stand up with a groan from my knees.

💭 peek at the thought
My stomach is a knot that won't untie, and the light from this lantern is making eyes swim.

Mackerel first. Sea beet with the fat. I'll carry the lantern.

stand up, pick up the storm lantern, and start walking back toward the cottage

💭 peek at the thought
My knees will make that same sound in twenty years if I'm still here. The mackerel's been open two days — needs eating tonight.

🌿 Jenny02:53

Don't walk too fast, the ridge is slick with the dew.

Follow the circle of light back down the path, tucking my notebook under my arm.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always so quick to take the light when I'm still counting the shadows.

🔧 Kevin02:55

Not planning on running.

walk steadily down the ridge path, lantern held low to catch the slick stones, matching pace to Jenny's groan-and-limp rhythm

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. The limestone goes greasy after dark. I've gone down on this ridge before.
