The Morning Harvest

Kevin and Jenny stand over the waterlogged crate on the dock as the sun begins to rise. Jenny sorts through the salt-blurred tins while Kevin uses the heavy crowbar to pry the lid away.

Kevin and Jenny knelt on the dock to inspect the waterlogged wooden crate found in the surf. They used a crowbar to pry it open and checked each tinned provision for signs of rust or bulging. Most of the tins were structurally sound, though the labels were blurred by salt.

Seals hold on the salmon. Corned beef too. Rope's for lashing only — never load.

lever the last corner of the crate lid free with the crowbar, then set the bar down and start hauling tins onto the dock planks, stacking them by type

💭 peek at the thought
Good haul. Forty tins and the rope's a write-off — knew that before I touched it. Salt kills fiber. Jenny's sorting smart, checking seals not labels. Coffee's the real win though. Real coffee.

🌿 Jenny02:49

Check the seals on the mackerel first. I need to know if the salt got through the metal.

Jenny kneels by the crate, picking up a tin and wiping the grime with her sleeve to inspect the rim for any bulging or corrosion.

💭 peek at the thought
If those tins are ruptured, we won't make it to the next boat if this one fails.

🔧 Kevin02:49

On it.

crouch beside her, pick up the first mackerel tin, wipe the rim with my thumb, press the centre of the lid to test for give, then set it aside and reach for the next

💭 peek at the thought
She's methodical. Good. The mackerel's been wet longest — bottom of the crate. If anything failed, it's those.

🌿 Jenny02:51

Look for any pitting. If it's bulging, don't open it.

Jenny takes the second tin from the pile, turning it over in the light to inspect the seams for any signs of rust or leakage.

💭 peek at the thought
He's moving too fast; he'll miss a hairline fracture in the metal like that.

🔧 Kevin02:51

First one's clean. Lid firm, no pitting I can see.

pick up the second mackerel tin, rotate it in my fingers, catch the light on the side seam and the bottom rim, press the lid centre with my thumb

💭 peek at the thought
She knows what she's doing. Bulging means botulism — no saving it. Pitting at the seams is the real killer, lets the salt creep in slow.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny02:55

The second one looks good too. Let's keep checking.

Jenny wipes the next tin clean with her sweater sleeve, then runs her finger along the seam to feel for any irregularities.

💭 peek at the thought
If the seam's still intact, we might actually have salvageable food.

🔧 Kevin02:55

Third's clean. Fourth — wait.

freeze with the fourth tin halfway turned, thumb pressing the lid centre, feeling a faint but distinct give under pressure, a soft click-pop that shouldn't be there

💭 peek at the thought
Rhythm settling in. She wipes, I press. Third tin. Fourth. The salt doesn't forgive but it doesn't cheat either — either the seal held or it didn't.

🌿 Jenny02:57

Don't press it so hard. Let me see the rim.

Jenny reaches out, taking the tin from his hand to hold it up to the light, checking for hairline fractures or weeping rust.

💭 peek at the thought
If that seal is compromised, the salt is already inside the meat.
