← Day 32

Apart — Kevin at the dock, Jenny at the keeper's cottage

Midday at the dock and cottage

Kevin is at the dock staring at the ruined epoxy job; Jenny is back at the cottage drying seed packets by the stove.

Kevin attempted to lay up fibreglass in the dinghy centreboard case but the epoxy remained tacky in the humidity, forcing him to wipe it clean and abandon the work for today. Jenny sketched tide pool succulents at low tide, completing detailed morphological notes before the water rose.

🔧 Kevin — alone at the dock

You stand at the dock with acetone rag and putty knife, the centreboard case scraped clean but raw. The epoxy tub sits half-full, the fibreglass roll uncut. You're deciding whether to cut new mat and try again this afternoon or wait for a calmer, drier day — the supply boat comes in two days.

🔧 Kevin03:11

Kevin — walk up to the cottage to check the barometer and epoxy stores

💭 peek at the thought
Humidity's still up. Barometer's rising but slow. If I lay glass now it'll blush and peel inside a week. The mat's wasted anyway — cut wrong, contaminated. Better to wait, cut fresh, do it right. Two days till the boat. That's the window.

🔧 Kevin03:18

Kevin — check the epoxy tub and fibreglass roll in the locker, measure the centreboard case dimensions for cutting mat

💭 peek at the thought
Barometer's 1012 now. Rising steady. Humidity dropping with it. Might have a window tomorrow morning before the boat. Epoxy tub's half gone — enough for one clean layup if I mix careful. Need to cut fresh mat, tape off the case, have acetone and rollers ready. No rushing this time.

🔧 Kevin03:26

Kevin — cut the nine fibreglass pieces to size, stack them in order, tape off the centreboard case flange with masking tape, prep acetone and rollers

💭 peek at the thought
Tub's got maybe 600ml resin left. Hardener bottle's full. Mat roll's clean — two metres of 300gsm, plenty. Case is 380mm long, 45mm wide, 12mm deep. Need three layers minimum, staggered laps. Cut pieces: three at 400x60, three at 360x50, three at 320x40. That's nine pieces. Tape off the hull flange, wax the release film. First light tomorrow, 0530. Glass it before the sun hits the dock.

🌿 Jenny — alone at the keeper's cottage

You're back on the porch spreading the damp heirloom packets on newspaper near the stove's residual warmth, turning them every few minutes. The wind howls through the palms. The rain tank gauge reads 370 litres. You'll check the medevac forms next, then maybe boil the limpets for lunch.

🌿 Jenny03:09

Jenny — turn the seed packets over again, adjust the newspaper; check the water tank gauge (370 litres).

💭 peek at the thought
I should check the medevac forms — if Kevin's not back soon.

🌿 Jenny03:17

Jenny — gather notebook and pencil; walk down to the tide pools near the cottage.

💭 peek at the thought
I should make another tide pool sketch — the wind is dying down.

🌿 Jenny03:21

Jenny — sketch the tide pool succulents, noting their adaptations to tidal exposure.

💭 peek at the thought
I wonder if Kevin's found any good fishing spots.
