← Day 320

the keeper's cottage · day 320 · afternoon

Evening meal and letter

Kevin and Jenny meet at the cottage as daylight fades. The kettle sings on the wood stove. Kevin sets the sealed letter to Tom on the table. Jenny eases into a chair, ankle elevated, the heirloom seed packets dry enough to sort. The barometer on the wall still reads 1027.

The heat is oppressive as the clouds thicken further over the island. Kevin and Jenny spend the afternoon inside the cottage, watching the barometer needle drop while preparing for the supply boat in four days.

Kettle's boiled. Tea?

pour two mugs of tea, set one near Jenny's chair, sit opposite her with my own mug, leave the letter on the table between us

💭 peek at the thought
The letter sits there like a weight I can't lift. Three lines. That's what I told myself. Three lines and it's done. But my thumb keeps finding the edge of the envelope, tracing the seal I already made. The dock held today. The shim held. The ring held. Everything I touched held. Except this.

🌿 Jenny03:27

Please. The barometer is dropping fast, Kevin.

wrap both hands around the warm mug, watch the steam rise, avoid his eyes.

💭 peek at the thought
My ankle is burning again, and he's looking at the seeds like they're a problem.

🔧 Kevin03:29

It's 1027. Steady since noon.

sit back, cradle my mug, glance at the barometer on the wall, then at the letter, then at her ankle propped on the stool

💭 peek at the thought
She's watching the steam, not me. The barometer's been steady at 1027 all afternoon — I checked it three times while the epoxy cured on the doubler plate. But her ankle's swollen, she's been on it all day in the garden, and the sky's got that bruised look it gets before a proper blow. She feels it in the bones. I feel it in the chest.

🌿 Jenny03:29

It's not steady. The air is heavy. Something is coming.

reach out and touch the edge of a dry seed packet, my thumb tracing the rough paper.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks the numbers are the truth, but I can feel the weight in my bones.

🔧 Kevin03:30

The dock held today. North piling shim's solid. Mooring ring's fast with the doubler plate.

take a sip of tea, set the mug down hard enough to ring the table, let the silence stretch

💭 peek at the thought
She's not talking about the barometer. She's talking about the letter. About Tom. About the sixteen days that letter's sat in my pocket while I found every other job on this island to do first. The dock held. The shim held. The ring held. Three lines. That's what I said. Three lines and I couldn't write them.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny03:31

The dock doesn't matter if the storm takes us. Look at the glass.

lean back, wincing as a sharp throb hits my ankle, and watch the needle on the barometer creep downward.

💭 peek at the thought
He's talking about wood and bolts while the sky is turning to bruise.

🔧 Kevin03:33

The glass says 1027. Same as noon.

glance at the barometer again, then reach across the table and slide the letter closer to me, thumb still caught on the flap

💭 peek at the thought
The needle hasn't moved. I'm looking right at it — 1027, same as noon, same as when I came in. But her jaw's tight, her knuckles white on the mug, and she's seeing something I can't. Or won't. The letter sits between us. Three lines. I've written harder things on bulkhead plates with a centre punch in a Force 9.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny03:33

It's falling, Kevin. Can't you feel the heat?

pull my hand away from the letter and look at the rusted seed tin on the shelf.

💭 peek at the thought
He's trying to anchor the world with facts, but the pressure is failing.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin03:34

It's the lull before. Feels like the Bay of Biscay, forty minutes in the water.

let my hand rest where she left it, palm up on the table, eyes on the seed tin, voice low — I can't write it. Not yet. Give me till morning. The tide'll be right for the north piling check then. I'll write it after.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right about the heat. It's thick in the cottage, presses on the lungs. And she's moved my hand from the letter — not unkind, but firm. Like she's done a hundred times when I'm fussing over some bolt that's already true. The seed tin on the shelf — Jenny's grandmother's, the one she guards like a live coal. She's not looking at the barometer anymore. She's looking at that tin, like it holds the answer.

🌿 Jenny03:35

I'm going to check the rain tank. It's too hot to sit here.

stand up slowly, gripping the table as my ankle fluxes, and walk toward the back of the cottage.

💭 peek at the thought
He's talking about the sea and I'm thinking about the infection in my leg.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin03:37

Tank's 388. Checked it at dawn.

watch her go, wait until her footsteps fade on the porch boards, then pick up the letter and turn it over in my hands, thumb pressing the sealed flap

💭 peek at the thought
She's leaving the letter on the table. Leaving me with it. The tank's 388 litres — I checked it this morning while the epoxy was curing. She knows that. She checked it yesterday. But the heat's driving her out, same as it drove me to the dock at first light. The ankle's bad. I saw the wince. She won't ask for help. I won't offer it unless she does. That's the shape of us.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny03:37

(silent)

step out onto the porch, the humid air hitting my face like a wet blanket, and lean against the cool metal of the tank.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so obsessed with the numbers, he can't see the sky changing.
