The Approaching Squall
The pair meets at the dock as the first heavy drops of rain begin to hit the dust. The wind picks up from the east, rattling the sea beet clouds.
Kevin and Jenny secured the dinghy with multiple spring lines and chafe guards at the dock, then split to work on their separate tasks. Kevin drove the greenheart shim under the north piling toe at low tide and checked the mooring ring with oak wedges. Jenny mixed lime into the garden bed soil and began de-damping the heirloom seeds from the tin.
Morning.
Walk to the north piling and examine the scoured void at the toe, checking if the tide has dropped enough to drive the greenheart shim.

The tide is still too high for the shim, Kevin. It's going to break soon.
wipe the rain from my eyes and check the barometer again.

It'll hold till low tide. But if the barometer hits 1005 and the wind backs west, we double the lines and brace the ring before dark — surge comes faster than the forecast.
Check the barometer again, then walk to the mooring ring and test the oak wedges for shift by pushing the ring sideways with my weight.

Then we double the lines now. I'm not waiting for the surge to tell us we're wrong.
grab the coil of new rope and head for the dinghy.

Right. Two springs forward, two aft, breast line to the ring. Chafe gear on every lead.
Follow Jenny to the dinghy, grab the heavy weather line already rigged as second stern spring, and start running a new forward spring from the bow cleat to the dock bollard with proper chafe guards.

Make the breast line tight. If that slackens, the whole dinghy takes the dock.
pull the rope taut and cleat it off in a figure-eight.

Breast line snug. Running the second forward spring now.
Pull the second forward spring tight from the dinghy's midships cleat to the shore bollard, leather chafe guard in place, and cleat it off figure-eight. Then check all four lines for even tension.

Check the aft springs. If the tide swings hard, it'll pull those pilings out.
walk to the stern of the dinghy and test the rear lines with my weight.
