Mid-morning check on garden and dock

Kevin and Jenny meet at the garden beds. The tarp corners are secured. Bed three has four heirloom seeds planted with uneven lime. The generator cover is battened. The dock mooring ring remains loose. The barometer reads 1024 hPa steady. The tide is rising. They stand together, deciding what to tackle next before the storm.

Kevin probed the mooring ring mortise and found rot extending 18 inches below the waterline at the seaward end, marking the boundary with chalk. Jenny prepared the heirloom garden bed and planted the first viable seed from the rusted tin, but her trembling hands and infected ankle slowed the work.

The tide is coming in faster than the forecast. We need to secure that ring before the boat arrives.

Jenny wipes her lime-covered hands on her trousers and stands slowly, wincing as she shifts weight off her left ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
If I don't plant these now, I'm just guarding a graveyard of potential. My own feels like it might burst.

Aye. Wedges bought us time, not fixed it. Need to sister the piling proper — greenheart if we've got length, oak if we don't. And the toe needs a shim driven at low water. That's tomorrow's ebb.

walk to the dock, inspect the mooring ring mortise and the north piling toe at current tide level

💭 peek at the thought
She's right about the tide. The forecast was wrong — it always is here. The ring's mortise is rotted three feet back; oak wedges held through last spring tide but the scour's eating the toe. If the supply boat tries to come alongside with that ring shifting, we lose the dock section. And the boat. And three days of supplies.

way then. I'll finish the bed while the tide is out.

Jenny picks up the seed tin from the dirt, her thumb tracing the rust in the metal before she turns back toward the cottage.

💭 peek at the thought
He's right about the wood, but I'm thinking about the soil. If the salt kills these, the whole year was for nothing.

Don't overdo the bed. Lime's heavy.

continue to the dock, crouch at the mooring ring, probe the mortise depth with a spike to measure how far the rot extends below waterline

💭 peek at the thought
She's favoring that ankle more than she admits. The wince at the garden, the slow stand — she's not putting full weight on it. Should've wrapped it tighter this morning. Should've made her sit. But she'd have fought me on it, and we'd have wasted breath neither of us has.

🌿 Jenny04:11

I know the ratio, Kevin.

Jenny enters the cottage, sets the seed tin on the shelf, and sits at the table to ice her throbbing ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks it's just about the amount. It's about the chemistry. The pH is already screaming at the edge.

Kevin — drive the spike deep into the mortise at three points — shore end, middle, seaward — feeling for the sound wood boundary, then mark the rot line with chalk on the piling face

💭 peek at the thought
She knows the ratio. She knows the beds. She knows the tide times and the barometer trends and which seeds came from her grandmother's tin and which came off the supply boat. What she doesn't know is how to ask for help without feeling like she's failed. And I don't know how to offer it without sounding like I'm keeping score.
