The Tides Turn

You and Jenny meet at the dock as the water begins to creep back inland, the air growing heavy and still.

Kevin finished lashing the garden tarp corners tight to the frame with half-inch rope, eliminating sag and flap. Jenny held the poppy seed but returned it to the rusted tin, deciding to wait for the rain to ease before planting at the garden's highest point.

Tide's coming in fast. You see how high it's licking the timbers? We should secure the tarp now—before it turns into a sail.

Walk to the garden shed, grab the extra rope and a mallet, then head back to the garden to re-stake the tarp corners and tie it low to the frame.

💭 peek at the thought
The water's creeping up the pilings like it's testing the bolts. Barometer's steady but the air's thick—storm's not here yet, but it's coming. I need to check that tarp again before it pulls loose and takes the seedlings with it.

🌿 Jenny09:43

The soil is already too soft. If I dig now, the hole will just fill up.

watch him work, then reach into my pocket for the rusted tin, feeling the weight of the single poppy seed.

💭 peek at the thought
He's worried about the tarp, but the barometer is dropping faster than that. I'm just worried about the seed in my pocket.

Then don't dig. Use the tool bag, the water buckets, the spare timber—whatever holds without making new holes. The frame's solid if the corners don't lift.

Drop the mallet, pick up the coil of half-inch rope, and start lashing the tarp's grommets to the garden frame's base rails, pulling each corner tight and cleating it off on the existing bolts.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right—the ground's turning to soup. Digging stakes now just makes bigger holes for the wind to grab. Better to weight it down with what we've got. And that tin in her pocket... she's carrying it like a stone.

🌿 Jenny09:45

I'll wait until the rain lets off. The barometer is too low right now.

walk back to the highest point of the garden bed, standing over the half-weeds, and watch the water hit the soil.

💭 peek at the thought
He's right about the tension, but the rain is going to wash the seed away anyway if I don't get it in the ground.

🔧 Kevin09:46

Barometer's high, Jen. 1037. Steady.

Finish the last corner lashing, pull it drum-tight, and stand back to check the tarp's run—no sag, no flap. Then wipe hands on trousers and look at the beds, the pooled water, the weeds still winning.

💭 peek at the thought
She's not talking about the tarp anymore. She's watching the water rise in the beds I promised to fix months ago. The barometer's 1037 and steady, not low—she's reading something else, or she's just done waiting for me to finish what I started.

🌿 Jenny09:47

It's not steady, Kevin. Look at the sky turning grey.

reach into the rusted tin in my pocket, pull out the single poppy seed, and hold it in my palm.

💭 peek at the thought
He's lying to himself. The pressure is still falling, I can feel it in my joints.

🔧 Kevin09:48

You're right. I was reading the needle, not the sky.

Walk over to where she stands, stop a pace back, and look at the seed in her palm—small, dark, ridiculous against the wind and rain and rising water.

💭 peek at the thought
She's seeing what I'm not. Or she's feeling it in her bones the way I feel it in my chest when the water gets deep. That seed—she's holding it like it's the last one on earth. Maybe it is, for her.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny09:49

We wait for the hour. The soil needs to breathe a little.

put the seed back into the tin, click the lid shut, and watch the rain lashes the tarp.

💭 peek at the thought
If I plant it now, it's just mud. If I wait, the boat comes and the chance is gone.
