Waiting for the Supply Boat

The sun begins to dip lower, casting long shadows across the dock. The tide is at its lowest, revealing the secrets of the reef.

Kevin attempted to drill a hole into the dock mooring ring to prepare for replacement planks, but the drill bit caught on the hardened wood. Jenny watched from the edge of the dock, observing the reef at low tide while they discussed the expected arrival of the supply boat.

🔧 Kevin02:05

Kevin — walk to the mooring ring at the dock edge, set up the drill over the third marked hole, and begin drilling the 150mm through-bolt hole

💭 peek at the thought
Third through-bolt. Mortise is clean, ring's stable on two. Need to drill the last hole before the water comes back. Light's fading but there's enough.

🌿 Jenny02:07

Do you want some water? Or a break?

Walk toward the dock edge, shielding eyes from the glare.

💭 peek at the thought
The sound of that drill is cutting right through the silence. He's still at it, even in this heat. I wonder if he knows how hungry I am.

🔧 Kevin02:07

Water. Thanks.

pause drilling, wipe sweat from face with forearm, wait for her to reach me

💭 peek at the thought
Throat's dry. Haven't stopped since the tide turned. She's close enough to hear the drill.

🌿 Jenny02:09

The boat is tomorrow. Are you sure they'll actually show up?

Hand him the water bottle.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so focused on the wood. I'm focused on the way the water is retreating further than it should.

🔧 Kevin02:09

They'll show. Or they won't. Bolt's going in either way.

drink half the bottle in one go, hand it back, pick up the drill again

💭 peek at the thought
Bottle's warm. Tastes like plastic and salt. She's asking the question we both know the answer to.

🌿 Jenny02:11

Jenny — stand at the edge of the dock, watching the exposed rocks.

💭 peek at the thought
Always so practical. It's the bolt or the world with him. But the tide is going too far out too fast. ownSAY: Right. I just hope they have the flour I ordered. Breakfast was light.

🔧 Kevin02:11

Kevin — align the drill bit on the third mark, brace against the dock plank, start the hole slow and straight

💭 peek at the thought
She's not leaving. Waiting for something — maybe the drill to finish, maybe me to say more. The reef's laid bare out there, ribs of rock the charts don't show.

🌿 Jenny02:13

Jenny — lean over the edge of the dock, squinting at the purple plants on the reef.

💭 peek at the thought
That vibration... it's the only thing moving in this heat. I can see a cluster of something purple on the lower reef, barely exposed. I've never seen that species this far up the ridge.
