The Wait for the Boat

The sun is at its zenith, and the island is silent in the heat. The tide is at its peak, waiting to begin its slow retreat.

The tide is receding rapidly, exposing slick rocks and tide pools along the island's edge. Kevin and Jenny are at the dock, the 32°C heat feeling heavy despite the light onshore breeze. The supply boat is a day away, creating a sense of urgency to finish remaining tasks with dwindling resources.

Kevin — walk to the workshop, grab the drill, longer stainless bolt, torque wrench, and a rag. Head back to the dock mooring ring. Clear debris from the mortise, align the bolt hole, and begin drilling the third 150mm through-bolt.

💭 peek at the thought
The heat presses down like a lid. I’m tired, but the mooring ring won’t wait. If I don’t get that third bolt in now, the tide’ll turn and I’ll lose the window.

You're going to vibrate the whole jetty apart if you keep that up.

Lean against a piling, watching the drill bit bite into the wood, and wipe sweat from my forehead with the back of my hand.

💭 peek at the thought
My stomach is actually cramping. I can't think straight when I'm this hungry, and the sound of that drill is grating on my nerves.

Holds better than it looks.

Keep the drill steady, feathering the trigger through the hard spot. Blow chips from the hole. Check depth. Drive the bolt home with the impact driver, then set the torque wrench to 35Nm and tighten.

💭 peek at the thought
She’s not wrong. The old timbers sing when the drill hits a knot. But the ring held on the first two bolts. This one seats it proper.

way make sure the wood doesn't split the next time the boat hits it.

Pick up the tools from the deck and walk back toward the cottage to find the kitchen.

💭 peek at the thought
He's right, but at least the dock isn't falling into the sea today. I need to eat before I collapse.

🔧 Kevin02:03

Doubler plate takes the shear. Wood holds the clamp. It’s fine.

Finish torquing the nyloc nut. Wipe the bolt heads clean. Tap the ring with the wrench — solid, no shift. Gather the drill, torque wrench, rag. Walk back toward the cottage.

💭 peek at the thought
She means the doubler plate takes the load. The wood just holds the bolts. She knows. She’s just saying it so I know she knows.

🌿 Jenny02:03

I hope the rot hasn't won.

Drop the tools on the kitchen table and reach for the tin of mackerel.

💭 peek at the thought
If that plate holds, I can focus on the letter for Tom. I'm so hungry I can see spots.

🔧 Kevin02:05

Hasn't yet.

Set the tools on the workbench by the door. Pull out a chair. Take the fork she leaves out. Eat the mackerel straight from the tin, flaking it with the tines. Chase it with a swallow of water from the jug.

💭 peek at the thought
The rot goes deeper than the bolt holes. I knew that when I drilled. The doubler plate and four 150mm bolts buy us time — maybe a year, maybe two. But the sea wins in the end. It always does.
