The Storm Breaks

The rain begins to fall in heavy sheets, lashing against the roof as you retreat inside. The wind starts to howl through the radio mast.

The air is heavy and humid as the pressure continues to dip to 1026 hPa, signaling the approaching storm. The wind has shifted to the south, picking up and whistling through the cottage gaps. The tide is receding, exposing more of the shoreline near the dock.

🌿 Jenny07:43

Kevin! Get the tarp over the seed tin! The wind is picking up!

Limp to the kitchen, sit on the floor, and wrap my ankle tightly with a clean cloth to dull the throbbing.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping too fast; if this storm hits hard, the seedlings in the garden will be washed away.

🔧 Kevin07:44

On it. Hold tight.

grab the spare tarp from the porch roll, sprint to windward side, snap it over the seed tin and generator, weight the corners with the tool bag and a jerrycan, lash the edges to the ridge beam with sail twine from the oarlock repair kit.

💭 peek at the thought
Rain’s coming hard, wind’s up. Tarp’s loose on the porch—seed tin and generator need cover before they soak. Jenny’s ankle’s bad, she’s wrapping it now. I should move fast but not rush—slip on wet wood and I’m no use to either of us.

🌿 Jenny07:45

Watch the knots! The wind is coming from the south now!

Lean against the cold stone wall and watch him through the window, sketching the frantic movement of the tarp in my head.

💭 peek at the thought
If that tarp catches the wind, it'll rip right off and take grandmother's seeds with it.

🔧 Kevin07:47

Almost got it—just tightening the windward edge.

tie a ridge line from the tarp’s peak to the radio mast base using the new half-inch rope, then re-tension the corner lashings with a trucker’s hitch, snug the windward side first, then ease the leeward to avoid tearing.

💭 peek at the thought
South wind means gusts lifting the tarp’s lee side—those corner lashings are taking the load. If they slip, water pools and sags the canvas. Need to check tension, add a ridge line to keep it pitched. Jenny’s watching, ankle wrapped, but she’s not moving—good. I’ll secure it right this time.

🌿 Jenny07:48

Careful with the mast! Don't over-tension the line!

Wince as a sharp spike of pain shoots through my ankle, shifting my weight to the good leg.

💭 peek at the thought
He's moving fast, but if that mast sags, the whole thing comes down.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin07:49

Got it. Moving the line off the mast.

untie the ridge line from the mast base, run it instead to the eyebolt on the south-facing porch post (the one I reinforced with the two-by-four brace), re-establish tension with the trucker’s hitch, then check the tarp’s pitch—high in the

💭 peek at the thought
She’s right—the mast’s already got storm bracing, and that insulator’s repaired but not trustworthy in hard wind. Over-tension could whip the mast or crack the insulator again. Need to support the tarp without loading the mast. Jenny’s in pain, but she’s watching—she knows the risks. I’ll shift the anchor point to something solid and lower.

🌿 Jenny07:50

Check the weight on the generator! The wind is lifting the corner!

Press my hand against the cold glass, watching him to see if the porch post holds.

💭 peek at the thought
That's better. The mast can't take the full shear of these gusts.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin07:51

On it—securing the corner now.

run a new line from the tarp’s windward corner down to the mooring ring on the dock (close, sheltered from direct gusts), tie a round turn and two half-hitches, then take up slack with a trucker’s hitch, pull it tight so the tarp lies flat

💭 peek at the thought
Wind’s getting under the tarp’s windward corner—it’s lifting, could peel back like a sail. Jenny’s watching the generator, knows if it gets wet we lose power and radio. Porch post should hold—it’s got the brace, but I need to anchor that corner low and tight, not just lash it. Use the spare rope and a proper anchor knot.
