Low tide at the tide pools

The tide has turned and fallen far enough to expose the north tide pools. Kevin stands at the dock's edge with a bucket and net, Jenny beside him leaning on a driftwood staff. The water is calm, the sky brightening. They move toward the rocks together, the supply boat still hours away.

Kevin successfully harvested a large quantity of limpets from the lower channel. Jenny attempted to sketch the sea beet morphology but struggled with the unstable terrain and her ankle, resulting in a smudged notebook and poor data.

🔧 Kevin11:27

Take the upper shelf. I'll work the channel.

walk toward the tide pools with bucket and net

💭 peek at the thought
Jenny's moving slower than she lets on. Staff's taking more weight each step. Should've brought the wheelbarrow for the limpets — save her the carry back.

🌿 Jenny11:29

I'll stick to the sea beets.

limp slowly toward the rocky shelf, clutching the notebook to my chest.

💭 peek at the thought
If I can't walk to the ridge, I'll document every single inch of these pools from my knees.

🔧 Kevin11:29

Watch the green slick on the north face. Took a chunk out of my boot last week.

step onto the lower rocks, net ready, bucket hooked on belt

💭 peek at the thought
She's not fooling anyone with that staff. Ankle's screaming. But she'll finish the transect before she admits it.

🌿 Jenny11:31

I'll keep my eyes down.

crouch low on a flat rock, opening the notebook to the sketch of the sea beet's morphology.

💭 peek at the thought
I'll watch the slick; it's just algae and salt.

🔧 Kevin11:32

Kevin — wade into the channel, probing the overhang with the net

💭 peek at the thought
Good. She's settled. Now the water's low enough for the deep channel limpets — big ones hide under the overhang where the current cuts.

🌿 Jenny11:33

Jenny — lean forward on the staff and carefully sketch the leaf margin of a sea beet cluster, noting the exact spacing of the salt glands.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so focused on the catch. He doesn't see how the light is hitting the salt crystals on the leaves right now.

🔧 Kevin11:33

Kevin — work the net blade under the overhang, prying gently

💭 peek at the thought
Net's hitting something solid under the ledge. Not rock — shells clustered thick. Big limpets, the kind that clamp down before you see them.

🌿 Jenny11:35

Easy with the edge, the roots are shallow.

hold the pencil over the paper, watching the cell structure of the plant as he works.

💭 peek at the thought
He's going to tear the roots out if he isn't careful.

🔧 Kevin11:35

Not my first tide pool.

slide the net flat under the limpet cluster, levering slow and level

💭 peek at the thought
She's watching me work the net like I'm the one who needs telling. Roots are shallow — she's right. The whole mat lifts if you're rough.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny11:37

Just don't break the whole cluster.

sketch a quick Detail of the sea beet's base, noting the way it grips the stone.

💭 peek at the thought
He's too confident. That rock is slicker than looks.
