The Calm Before Tomorrow

The wind picks up as the barometer drops further. The tide begins to turn, slowly reclaiming the shore.

The tide is rising against the dock pilings as the air pressure continues its steady drop. Inside the cottage, the smell of sharp alcohol and wood smoke fills the air while Jenny bites down on the leather strap, her face pale with effort as she prepares to debride the angry swelling on her ankle.

Jenny. Wind's shifting southeast. Pressure's dropping below a thousand. I'm securing the seed tin and checking the dinghy seacocks. You stay put.

walk to the kitchen, lift the heirloom seed tin from the shelf and set it on the stove shelf away from any spray, then head out to the dock to check both seacocks on the dinghy

💭 peek at the thought
Wind's backing southeast. Barometer's dropping faster now — below 1000 with a southwest swell building. The rules I wrote in the notebook are clear: secure the seed tin on the stove shelf and check the dinghy's seacocks twice. The supply boat won't come on schedule. Jenny's in no shape to move fast if this blows up.

🌿 Jenny08:47

Check the intake for debris too, the tide was acting up last week.

Jenny picks up the sterilized blade and the bottle of alcohol, wiping the metal over the flame of the stove as she prepares to bite down on a leather strap.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping too fast for a clear night; if the boat doesn't come, I'm stuck with this leg for weeks.

Intake's clear. Seacocks both shut tight. Bilge dry. Coming back in.

walk back from the dock to the cottage porch, step inside, and stand by the kitchen table watching her work

💭 peek at the thought
She's still planning to debride again. The infection's tracking past her knee and she's burning blades on a wood stove. Medevac hasn't answered. The wind's backing southeast and the barometer's falling — this isn't weather to be cutting on yourself in a cottage with no backup. But she won't stop if I tell her. She never stops.

🌿 Jenny08:49

Don't just stand there, I need the water.

Jenny grips the leather strap between her teeth and presses the blade into the edge of the red, angry swelling.

💭 peek at the thought
If he keeps watching like that, I'm going to slip and cut deeper than I need to go.

🔧 Kevin08:51

Kettle's heating. Got the clean cloth ready too.

fill the kettle from the rain tank, set it on the wood stove to boil, and lay out the clean cloth beside her on the table

💭 peek at the thought
She needs water. The cast iron pot's on the stove with the sea beet water — hot but not sterile. I've got the kettle. She's cutting into her own leg with a flame-sterilized blade and a leather strap between her teeth because the radio gave us nothing. The wind's rising outside. I should've keyed the mic again. Should've tried Tom's frequency. Should've done a lot of things.

🌿 Jenny08:52

Hold the light steady, don't let it flicker.

Jenny winces through the leather, hand shaking slightly as she makes the first cut into the infection.

💭 peek at the thought
The pain is throbbing in time; if I don't get this out, I'll never be able to walk the north ridge.

🔧 Kevin08:52

Light's steady. Breathe through it.

brace the LED headlamp in both hands, elbows locked against the table edge, keeping the beam fixed on her leg

💭 peek at the thought
My hands don't shake. Engines, storms, forty minutes in the Bay of Biscay — my hands don't shake. But holding this headlamp steady while she cuts into her own leg because the mainland won't answer, that's different. The beam catches the blade, the dark blood, the red streaks climbing past the old wound. She's not crying. She never cries. The wind's howling against the porch now. Barometer's still falling.

🌿 Jenny08:53

Pass me the alcohol, now.

Jenny drops the leather strap for a second and reaches for the bottle with a trembling hand.

💭 peek at the thought
It's deeper than it looked yesterday. I can feel the heat coming off the skin.
