Morning Day 376
The south-east wind continues to hold, and the scent of ripening fruit from the inland woods drifts on the humid air.
Kevin checked the south corner of the shade cloth and found the old twine rotted. He cut a clean length from the new coil and re-tied the corner with a secure knot. Jenny watched from the cottage wall, her ankle throbbing in the heat.
Stakes bit. Cloth's taut.
Wipe hands on thighs, glance at the tomato rows, then turn toward the porch where Jenny sits.

Check the knots on the south corner again. The wind is picking up speed.
stand up slowly, wincing as my ankle throbs, and walk toward the garden.

South corner held at dawn. But I'll check.
Walk the garden perimeter to the south stake, crouch, test the knot tension with two fingers.

Use the extra twine to double wrap. If that snaps, the whole row gets shredded.
reach into my pocket and pull out the roll of salt-crusted twine.

Twine's rotted. Won't hold a second blow.
Take the roll, snap a length between thumbs — fibres part with a dry crack — let it fall, pull the knife from belt, cut a clean length from the new coil lashed to the garden shed post.

Use the new coil. The stuff in the pocket is just salt now.
lean against the stone wall of the cottage, watching him work while the heat in my own ankle pulses.
