The approaching front

The first heavy drops of rain hit the corrugated roof as Jenny arrives. You and Jenny meet on the porch to gather the gear.

Kevin secures the radio mast guy lines and checks the dinghy mooring as the rain intensifies. Inside, Jenny struggles to remove the salt-soaked bandage from her swollen ankle in significant pain while the pressure continues to drop.

🌿 Jenny15:53

The pressure is dropping fast. We need to get the gear inside before the wind really starts.

Closes the notebook and tucks it into the waterproof bag.

💭 peek at the thought
way own is throbbing in time with the rain, but I need these sketches dry before they turn pulp.

Radio mast guys first. Then the dinghy. You take the notebook and seeds inside — I'll meet you there.

Walk to the radio mast and check the guy lines, tightening any slack.

💭 peek at the thought
Rain's here. Barometer was 981 and steady last I checked, but the air feels thick. She's right — get the gear in, then check the radio mast guys and the dinghy lines. Storm's moving faster than the glass says.

🌿 Jenny15:54

Don't take too long, my leg is screaming today.

Picks up the notebook and the seed tin, limping toward the cottage door.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so focused on the hardware while I'm the one literally falling apart at the seams.

🔧 Kevin15:54

Won't be long.

Check and tighten the radio mast guy lines, then walk to the dock to check the dinghy mooring lines.

💭 peek at the thought
Her leg's bad. She's not saying how bad. I'll check the mast guys fast, then the dinghy lines, get inside.

🌿 Jenny15:57

I'm going inside. The rain is getting heavy.

Steps into the kitchen and sets the seed tin on the wooden table.

💭 peek at the thought
At least the boat is secure. If that storm hits hard, I'm in trouble.

—

Walk to the dock and inspect all dinghy mooring lines — bow, stern, and spring — checking chafe protection and tension.

💭 peek at the thought
Rain's coming down hard now. Mast guys held. Dinghy lines next — bow, stern, spring. Make sure the chafe gear's seated. Then inside.

🌿 Jenny15:58

Hurricanes up. The sky is really opening up.

Sits on the kitchen chair and begins to unwrap the bandage from her ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
The wind is picking up. I need to get that salt wrap off before the infection gets worse.

🔧 Kevin15:58

Dinghy's secure. Porch door next.

Walk back to the cottage, close and latch the porch door against the wind, then check the generator storm lashings on the porch.

💭 peek at the thought
Dinghy lines are solid. Chafe gear seated. Spring line's the new half-inch three-strand — holds. Bow and stern reinforced. Engine's mounted, tested. She's unwrapping the ankle — needs a look, but the storm's hitting. Get inside. Secure the porch door. Check the generator lashings. Then the ankle.

🌿 Jenny16:00

It's stuck. Help me with some water?

Carefully peels the salt-soaked way away, wincing as the fabric catches on the raw skin.

💭 peek at the thought
The wrap is sticking to the wound. I can feel the heat radiating off the skin.

🔧 Kevin16:00

Kettle's hot. Hold still — I'll soak it loose.

Grab the kettle from the wood stove and a clean cloth, bring them to Jenny, and gently pour warm water over the stuck bandage while holding the cloth against it to loosen the fabric from the wound.

💭 peek at the thought
Bandage stuck to the wound. Needs warm water to loosen it, not pulling. She's tough but that's raw. Get the pot off the stove — limpet broth's done, but clean water in the kettle. Pour slow. Hold the cloth, let it soak.
