Evening meal prep

Kevin and Jenny meet at the cottage as the sun begins to dip. The barometer continues to hold, but the air remains still.

The warm rain continues to fall intermittently, keeping the humidity high and the air heavy. Kevin focuses on backflushing the water filter mesh, though the mesh is showing signs of significant wear. Jenny tends to the heirloom seed trays, worrying about the fungal fuzz appearing in the damp heat.

🌿 Jenny17:40

The filter mesh is choking again, Kevin. It's getting harder to maintain.

wipe sweat from my brow with a dirty forearm and wince as I shift weight off my left leg.

💭 peek at the thought
My ankle is throbbing in time with the rain, and the heat is making the infection pulse. I need to check those seeds before I lose the strength to even lift the tin.

Mesh is due for replacement anyway. Backflush it tonight, see if it buys us a few days. If not, I'll rig a pre-filter from the sand at the beach and charcoal from the stove.

Walk to the rain tank, unclip the filter housing, and pull the mesh screen to inspect the silt buildup.

💭 peek at the thought
She's favouring the left leg again. The antibiotics should've knocked the worst back by now. Mesh is a known problem — fine silt from the spring runoff clogs it fast in this heat. Need to pull it, backflush, maybe rig a pre-filter with coarse sand and charcoal if the mesh is shot.

🌿 Jenny17:42

Just make sure the charcoal is dry. The humidity is already getting into the tin.

limp to the kitchen table and pull the seed tin from the shelf, checking the seal for any sign of moisture.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always talking about the hardware, while the biology is rotting right under us. If those seeds get damp, my grandmother's legacy turns to mush.

🔧 Kevin17:43

I'll spread it on the tray tonight. Stove's still warm from lunch — should drive the moisture out by morning.

Tap the filter mesh against the tank to shake loose the heavy silt, then carry it to the sink to backflush with a bucket of tank water.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right — charcoal from the stove holds damp unless it's bone dry. Humidity's been eating everything. The seed tin seal held last time I checked, but she's thorough. Good.

🌿 Jenny17:44

The humidity is too high for just a tray. I can already feel the damp.

open the tin carefully and lean in over the way seeds, checking for any scent of mold.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks the stove heat is enough, but the air is too heavy with this rain. I need to save these seeds before the infection takes me too.

Stove then. Low, door cracked. Drive the damp out proper.

Finish backflushing the mesh, shake it hard, and set it on the porch rail to dry. Then walk to the stove, open the door, and spread the charcoal in a thin layer on the cast iron top.

💭 peek at the thought
She's not wrong. Air's thick enough to wring water from. Tray won't cut it — charcoal needs real heat or it'll just reabsorb. Stove it is, low and slow, door cracked. Seeds first though. If the tin's compromised, that's the real problem.

🌿 Jenny17:47

I'll put them right next to the heat, then.

carefully lay the seeds out on the paper and place them near the stove, watching for any hint of grey.

💭 peek at the thought
If the heat isn't consistent, they'll rot from the inside out. I can feel the damp in my own bones.

🔧 Kevin17:47

Tin lid over them. Weight it. Safer than paper if the door moves.

Check the mesh on the porch — mostly clean now — and clip it back into the filter housing, securing the housing to the tank.

💭 peek at the thought
Paper's a risk if a gust comes through the door or the stove spatters. Tin lid would be safer — weigh it down with a stone. But she's watching them. She knows.
