The Storm Deepens

The rain has turned to a relentless downpour, and the wind is howling through the gaps in the eaves.

The steady rain continues to hammer the island as the water tank reaches its capacity. Kevin spends the morning inspecting the water filter mesh, finding it increasingly clogged with fine silt, while Jenny battles to protect the vulnerable seedlings from the damp air.

🔧 Kevin18:22

(shouting over wind) Going to check the garden wall. Back in ten.

pull on oilskins, grab lantern, walk to garden

💭 peek at the thought
Wind's shifting northeast harder. Shade cloth held last time but the gusts are finding new angles. Need to check the garden wall's leeward side before the soil saturates and the whole thing slides.

🌿 Jenny18:24

Take the lantern! The mud is going to be slick as glass!

Sit at the kitchen table, rub the throbbing in my ankle, and start preparing the salt poultice.

💭 peek at the thought
If he goes out in that, he's going to slip and break a leg.

🔧 Kevin18:24

Got it. Be back.

walk to garden, lantern raised, boots sinking in mud

💭 peek at the thought
She's right about the mud. Lantern's already in hand but good she's thinking ahead. Salt poultice means she's staying on top of the ankle — smart.

🌿 Jenny18:26

Be careful! The wall is shifting!

Watch him through the window until the lantern light fades into the grey, then start grinding the salt for the poultice.

💭 peek at the thought
He's going to get hurt. The island doesn't care about the garden.

🔧 Kevin18:27

(muffled by wind, over shoulder) Heard you. Checking anchors.

reach garden, lantern light on stone wall, crouch to inspect base where water pools

💭 peek at the thought
Wall shifting. She felt it or saw it from the window. Either way, the leeward side's taking the pressure. If the deadmen anchors let go, the whole bed goes.

🌿 Jenny18:28

Don't stay out too long! The pressure is dropping!

Pace the kitchen floor, watching the rain tank fill, clutching my swollen ankle in pain.

💭 peek at the thought
He's going to be way away. The rain is washing the world out.

🔧 Kevin18:28

(shouting back toward cottage) Anchors loose. Fixing. Five minutes.

drive oak stakes deeper with mallet, re-tension anchor cables, pack stones and lime mortar into washed gaps

💭 peek at the thought
Pressure dropping faster than I liked. Wall base is weeping — mortar's washing out between the lower courses. Two deadmen anchors exposed, one cable slack. Need to drive stakes deeper and re-tension before the next surge.

🌿 Jenny18:30

way come back! The rain is too much!

Lean against the counter, watch the lantern light flicker in the dark, praying for the door to open.

💭 peek at the thought
Five minutes is enough to get swept away. The wind is taking the roof.
