The Rain Breaks

The first heavy drops fall against the corrugated metal roof. You and Jenny meet inside as the wind begins to pick up.

The rain intensifies from the west, forcing work indoors or under heavy tarps. Kevin spends the morning securing the dinghy and checking the generator, while Jenny focuses on protecting the seedlings from the salt-laden spray.

🌿 Jenny21:12

It's going to be a heavy one. Check the tarp on the porch.

Walk to the porch to secure the plastic sheeting over the drying seeds.

💭 peek at the thought
The rain is coming in fast; I hope the tarp on the seed tin is holding.

On it. Generator and dinghy first.

walk to the generator shed to check storm lashings, then down to the dock to verify dinghy mooring lines

💭 peek at the thought
Rain's here. She's already moving to the porch — good, means the ankle's holding. I'll check the generator lashings and the dinghy lines while she handles the seed tarp.

🌿 Jenny21:14

Be careful on the dock, the wind is already picking up.

Weight down the corners of the tarp with heavy rocks so it doesn't blow off.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always worried about the gear, but the seeds are what actually matter here.

🔧 Kevin21:14

Aye. Shouting if I need help.

walk down the dock to the dinghy, inspecting mooring lines and chafe guards as I go

💭 peek at the thought
She's right — gusts are hitting the dock planks hard. Lines took a beating last squall. Need to check chafe points and the starboard spring especially.

🌿 Jenny21:17

I'll stay here and watch the radio if the storm worsens.

Tighten the twine on the plastic over the seed tin.

💭 peek at the thought
If the wind catches that tarp, the seeds will be lost in the mud.

🔧 Kevin21:17

Right. Back in ten.

reach the dinghy, crouch to examine the bow line chafe guard and the starboard spring line where it leads to the cleat

💭 peek at the thought
Good. Radio watch means she's staying put and warm. Dock's slick already — rain and spray. Check the bow line first, it took the worst last time.
