← Day 388

Apart — Kevin at the dock, Jenny at the garden

Sheltering from the Surge

The rain turns into a downpour as the tide rises against the dock.

Kevin rigged a backup spring line for the dinghy using new half-inch rope from the crate, then walked back toward the cottage. Jenny weighted the garden tarp edges with stones and checked her ankle brace before retrieving the seed tin from the shelf.

🔧 Kevin — alone at the dock

You check for fraying on the new spring line. The water is already lapping over the lower pilings.

🔧 Kevin21:20

Kevin — walk the dock to the seaward bitt, check the second stern spring point, coil half-inch three-strand from the crate and rig a backup spring line with a round turn and two half hitches

💭 peek at the thought
Line's clean. No chafe at the fairlead, no fuzz at the splice. Good. Water's higher than last week — spring tide on top of the surge. Dock's holding. Greenheart sister plank's solid. North piling shim hasn't moved. But if the barometer keeps dropping and the wind backs further west, the fetch across the bay gets ugly. Should run another stern spring to the seaward bitt before full dark.

🔧 Kevin21:24

Kevin — walk back up the jetty toward the cottage, glancing at the garden plot for Jenny

💭 peek at the thought
Second spring's on. Snug but not singing — enough give for the surge. Knots seated. The half-inch three-strand from the crate is clean rope, no salt rot. Dinghy's tied four ways now: bow, stern, two springs. She'll ride it out. Barometer's 988 and steady per the noon read, but the sky's bruising purple west-southwest. Wind's still east but fading. That shift'll come after dark. Should check Jenny's ankle before I lose the light, then key the radio at 2000. She'll be at the garden or the cottage porch.

🔧 Kevin21:28

Kevin — step onto the porch, pause at the door, listen

💭 peek at the thought
Garden's empty. Tools leaned against the wall — trowel, fork, the spade I made. Seed trays under the tarp. No Jenny. She's probably on the porch or inside. Ankle's been bad three days. She won't sit still for long. Rain's spitting harder now, big drops that hit flat. Smells like ozone and wet stone. Porch light's on.

🌿 Jenny — alone at the garden

You ensure the heirloom seed tin is dry under the porch. The wind is beginning to rattle the gate.

🌿 Jenny21:18

Stay down, you damn thing.

Squat down and weight the edge of the tarp with several heavy stones.

💭 peek at the thought
If the wind catches under that tarp, the whole patch is gone, and I'll have nothing left to plant.

🌿 Jenny21:22

Jenny — adjust the ankle brace and check the skin for new notices.

💭 peek at the thought
My ankle is throbbing again; the damp is making the infection heavy.

🌿 Jenny21:26

Jenny — walk back to the cottage and retrieve the tin from the shelf.

💭 peek at the thought
I need to check the seed tin; if the moisture got in, everything is lost.
