EVENING

The tide is further out, exposing more of the barnacle-covered rocks. The rain has stopped, leaving the air heavy and smelling of salt.

Kevin spent the evening at the dock attempting to secure the loose mooring ring and free the shackle pin. Jenny rested on the porch, managing her swollen ankle while keeping an eye on the drying seeds. The air remains heavy and humid as the low tide begins its slow turn.

🔧 Kevin01:55

Pin's in. Needs cooling, then a proper torque. You want the wrench or the notebook?

walk to the tool bag on the dock and retrieve the torque wrench, setting it to 35Nm

💭 peek at the thought
Good. Slack water's here. Pin's seated but I didn't torque it proper — was too hot to hold the wrench steady. Need to let it cool, then snug it to 35Nm before the tide turns. Jenny's watching the rocks, not me. She's seen me fight worse than a shackle.

The notebook can wait. Let me see if it's actually seated.

Limp slowly toward him, leaning heavily on the dock railing for support.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks he's offering me a choice, but he's really asking if I'm capable of standing. My ankle is screaming, but I can't just sit here like a piece of furniture.

🔧 Kevin01:57

Careful. It's seated — I drove it home cherry-red. But I'll let you check. Just don't put weight on it till we're sure.

brace my shoulder under her elbow as she reaches the shackle, keeping most of her weight off the injured ankle while she leans in to inspect the pin with her good hand

💭 peek at the thought
She's moving on that ankle like it's nothing. Red line's still where I drew it. If it crosses tomorrow, I key the radio — no more waiting for the boat's schedule. I won't let her walk into sepsis for pride.

🌿 Jenny01:59

I've got it. Just... a little more room.

Gently shrug his arm off and reach down to touch the cooling metal of the pin, checking the gap between the head and the housing.

💭 peek at the thought
His hand is too tight on my shoulder. I know it's for my own good, but I hate feeling this fragile. The pin looks solid, but I need to feel the tension.

🔧 Kevin01:59

It's canted. See the gap on the starboard side? Oval wear let it sit crooked. I'll drift it square, then torque.

pull the bronze drift from my pocket and set it against the pin's exposed end, then tap it with the heavy wrench — light, controlled strikes — watching the gap close even around the housing

💭 peek at the thought
She's right — there's a hair of daylight between head and housing. Not seated flat. The oval wear on the eye let it cant. If I torque it now it'll bind crooked. Need to drift it true first.

🌿 Jenny02:01

Watch the housing. Don't force it too hard.

Lean in closer, squinting at the movement of the metal as it aligns with the edge of the bracket.

💭 peek at the thought
It's moving now. If it doesn't seat perfectly flush, the whole thing will shear the first time the boat pulls against the tide.

🔧 Kevin02:01

Walking true now. One more.

give one measured tap with the wrench, driving the pin home flush against the housing all around, then set the drift down and pick up the torque wrench, fitting it to the nut

💭 peek at the thought
She's seen me muscle things before. Knows the line between persuasion and breaking. The drift's moving it — pin's walking true now. Gap's closing even. One more tap should seat it flush.

🌿 Jenny02:03

35Nm. Keep it steady.

Watch the gauge of the torque wrench intently, ignoring the throb in my ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
Finally. It's a simple mechanical fix, but it feels like a victory when everything else is rotting or infected. Now for the torque—don't overdo it.

google/gemma-4-31b-it

🔧 Kevin02:03

Done. 35 flat. Dock'll hold the supply boat now.

set the torque wrench down in the tool bag, then wipe my hands on a rag and hold it out to her — an offer to help her back to the cottage

💭 peek at the thought
35Nm. Clean. No bounce. The pin's seated true and torqued. Dock's solid for the first time in months. She called the number before I did — she knows this gear better than she lets on.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny02:05

Thanks. I can make it.

Take the rag, wipe my hands, and begin the slow, agonizing limp back toward the cottage.

💭 peek at the thought
He's already thinking about the boat. I'm thinking about the fact that I can barely stand and my stomach is cramping from hunger.
