The Storm Breaks

The rain falls in sheets, instantly turning the path into a slick slide. The wind howls through the spruce trees, threatening to tear the garden shade cloth from its stakes.

The air is heavy and humid as the flat sky thickens with storm-laden clouds. The tide is receding steadily, exposing the slick rocks of the tide pools. Inside the cottage, the focus is on the impending supply boat and the physical toll of the island.

🌿 Jenny02:41

Kevin! The shade cloth—it's going to lift!

Attempt to stand, wincing as I put weight on my swollen ankle, and lean heavily against the porch railing to watch the garden.

💭 peek at the thought
The seedlings. If that cloth rips, the wind will shred the tomatoes in minutes. I can't walk, but I can't just watch them die.

🔧 Kevin02:41

Stay on the porch. I've got it.

sprint toward the garden, crouching low against the wind

💭 peek at the thought
The wind's shifting hard from the south — shade cloth will act like a sail on those tomato stakes. If it tears loose it takes seedlings with it. Jenny shouldn't be standing on that ankle in this slick.

🌿 Jenny02:43

Be careful with the anchors! Don't just yank them!

Grip the railing tight, knuckles white, and watch him through the grey sheets of rain.

💭 peek at the thought
He's going to trip in this mud. Or he'll just pull the stakes right out of the ground if he's too rough with it.

🔧 Kevin02:43

Not yanking. Checking tension first.

reach the garden frame, test each corner stake for give before adjusting the batten strips

💭 peek at the thought
She knows the garden better than I do — those deadman anchors held through the last surge because she placed them. Right.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny02:45

Check the south-west corner! That's where the wind hits hardest!

Lean further over the railing, squinting through the rain to track his movement across the mud.

💭 peek at the thought
Thank god he's actually listening for once. If he just yanked, he'd rip the fabric.

🔧 Kevin02:45

On it.

crab-walk to the south-west corner, boot-test the oak stake, then cinch the batten strip tighter with the mallet from my belt loop

💭 peek at the thought
South-west takes the full fetch. If that corner goes, the whole cloth peels like a banana. Oak stake there — she drove it deep.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny02:47

Make sure the anchors are deep! The wind is picking up again!

Watch his hands, my ankle throbbin in a pulse of heat with every gust.

💭 peek at the thought
He's holding it. If that corner goes, the whole row is lost to the mud.

🔧 Kevin02:47

Stake's solid. Strip's holding. Wind's got another gear in it though.

drive the mallet handle against the batten strip to seat it harder, then check the guy line tension to the deadman anchor point

💭 peek at the thought
Anchors are deep — she buried them herself. But the ground's turning to soup. If the stake walks, the deadman walks with it. Need to see if the timber strip's biting or just sliding.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny02:49

Watch the line! Don't let it slip through the stake!

Brace my weight against the Stone wall, breath hitching as I watch the rope strain.

💭 peek at the thought
If that line snaps, the whole thing turns into a sail. He's moving too fast on that slope.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin02:49

Not slipping. Notch is clean.

wrap the guy line twice more around the stake base and hitch it off hard, then move to the next corner

💭 peek at the thought
Line's singing under the load — good sign it's tight, bad sign if it saws through the stake notch. She's right to call it. Rain's cutting visibility to ten metres.
